willonomous
Specs are great but I'm really concerned with the exterior appearances. I think it really is true that Sony is at a financial low. We hear reports of Sony cutting jobs everywhere. And I've noticed that the craftsmanship of sony electronics in recent years have gone downhill for the most part. The fit and finish of their products are not nearly as good as before. Trying to be the "thinnest", they made the top and bottom lid of the E10 so thin that you can crush it with your hand. Saves cost I guess. Now lets look at these new Hi-MD units, all of them incorporate large portions of PLASTIC, even for control panel of the NH1 (as shown in the CES photos). Some units are even made entirely of plastic. I don't think this is trend setting from an aesthetic point of view. The only machine that I don't see plastic is with the Japanese EH1. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that the back side is the same as the front.
Christopher
I have moved this to the subforum "User Opinions of MD". Thanks.
Superbaldguy
Sad but true, most of today's electronic gizmos are made mostly of plastic. It seems that nobody expects nor even wants their precious toys to last too long, giving all of us an excuse to get something more up-to-date. I am dismayed at a lot of Sony's current MD line-up, as most of the units look cheap and fragile. It does allow the cost to be kept lower but if these devices fail within a year or two, people will quickly give up on the MD format as being too fragile. Gone are the days of the likes of the MZ-R50, with its all-aluminum body and sweet design; you know you have something solid in your hands with the likes of that machine or some older ones. My best advise is to enjoy your new MD units, make lots of recordings, and perhaps get a player as a compliment to your MDR.
alieninhead
We are a consumer culture. Trained that we must have something better, because, its better. Yes! Its better! Its newer. My computer just got upgraded to a 900mhz processor. I just bought a digital camera, its 2 MP. If it works for you, thats all that matters. But companies, and many parts of the "civilized" world, is switching to a point where that is not the issue. Wars will be fought in the PR lines, not in the trenches. ~a.i.h.
