11210
I'm new to Minidiscs and was wondering what people's comments were about the Sony N707. I need something that I can record speaking sessions at conferences and tradeshows. I will be coming from a 12 channel mixer at mic level. Do these have good sound? Do they hold up? Any other comments or ideas for me? How much is an acceptable price to pay? I know that in April Sony will be coming out with new ones but I need this before than. Thanks
Guest Anonymous
I'm very fond of my MZ-N707. I've recorded interviews and music on it almost daily for the past year, and it's been very reliable and very intuitive. Many journalists use them as workhorse MD recorders. If you're going to be recording directly out of a mixer you may be able to go through line-in, which would be even cleaner, but the MZ-N707 is ideal for speech through the mic jack, too. The only thing missing from the MZ-N707 is switchable mic sensitivity, but that's more of a consideration for loud music--if you're doing speech, you can leave it at AutoRec (automatic gain control) and let it roll. It takes an AA battery, which bulges from the back (as opposed to gumstick battery on N1 and N10), but I prefer it because it's so easy to replace. Obviously you can't drop it on concrete floors, but you'll be very happy with it.

I added some extra features to my MZ-N707 by going into service mode and changing some EEPROM values from a tutorial I got from here. I enjoy using my MZ-N707 on a daily basis in my car, in my pocket on the go, and hooked up to the line in on the speaker set at my job. I've used a radio shack mic to record some phone conversations and some interviews I've done with local celebrities. Before that, I even used the line in to record a concert with headphones, yes a set of headphones. It's a very versitile unit. Don't pay more than $120 as that was the price mine was and it came with a bundle of components: tape deck adapter, remote, NetMD software, car charger, home charger, and rechargable AA cell battery. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made.
