CNET is very keen on the new Sony Vaio AW125J/H, which is a true gem in its price range considering the sleek design and impressive featureset. Aside from having the attractive title of being the cheapest 18 inch laptop available with Blu-ray and a great native 16:9 resolution (most laptops have 16:10). This thing is a multimedia monster - of course when you have that in mind then it must mean it can have disappointing battery figures, and it does, in some aspects. However, this is a desktop replacement and I feel that it has the specs to most certainly qualify for that title. Here are the specs:

Price as reviewed / Starting price $1,849
Processor 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9400
Memory 4GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz
Hard drive 320GB, 7,200rpm
Chipset Mobile Intel P45 Express
Graphics 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT
Operating System Windows Vista Premium
Dimensions (WDH) 17.4 x 11.8 x 1.4 inches
Screen size (diagonal) 18.4 inches
System weight / Weight with AC adapter 7.9/9.2 pounds
Category Desktop Replacement

Some interesting things from the review I noticed included a mention about too much proprietary software being installed, which indicates to me that Stringer’s mention of “craplets” hopefully not being prevalent anymore obviously hasn’t gained much weight in the company. Also, CNET found that the battery life for their video playback tests was about 1hr and 53 minutes. The AW125J/H also scored the best times in the Adobe Photoshop CS3 image-processing test by a significant margin.
