SS 2 "iceeedtea's build" Problem

First of all I would like to thank all those people making such a forum available.

As a newbie I could get a lot of tips and tricks before even buying a MD Recorder.

So I downloaded and installed Iceeedtea's stripped down version of SS2.

Everything seemed to work fine until I tried to open it the first time.

I got an

"OMGJBOX caused an invalid page fault in

module METALLIC.DLL at 0177:02288503.

"

This was my first piece of Sony related Software, so I do not have any drivers, old versions or other Sonic Stage related Software on my PC

Ive got a Windows 98 SE 4,10.2222A and installed the newest DirectX 9.0b before setting up the SS2

Do I have to install any drivers before opening Sonic Stage (to be honest I will get my NE410 in the next few days-just wanted to be ready when it comes)

Somebody got an idea?

Welcome to MDCF.

SonicStage doesn't play nice with Windows 98, especially first edition. I don't know why it doesn't work for you. Error in "Metallic.dll" sounds like a problem with the "skin" of SonicStage 2.0. Try downloading the installer again. Did you run the md5 check to verify that the download wasn't corrupted?

Try uninstalling everything as per the instructions in this thread, and reinstall. Since you use Windows 98, you'll have to manually go through your computer and find those directories such as "Sony Corporation". Delete "Program FilesCommon FilesSony Shared", as well.

In addition, "iceeedtea's build" is just a trimmed version of the original installer, so it may not contain some items that may be required for it to function properly under Windows 98. "iceeedtea", that moron. Remind me to slap him when he comes back around here. :whatever:

No, you shouldn't need to install NE420 drivers, since they're already included with the installer. Just running through the setup process will automagically install everything you need in one shot.

Give that a try, see how it goes for you.

Thanks for the fast reply.

Yes, I ran the md5 checker and got an OK. Since the error comes during the startup I assume you're right concerning the skin.

I'll deinstall everything (including Registry entries), retry again and will keep you informed.

If a second install will not work I was thinking about installing SS 1.5, deinstalling it again and try SS 2 again, maybe just to get some unknown files needed

 Yo, I tried the reeinstall again (after eliminating anything in the registry such as Sony, OMG, NetMD, Walkman,Falcon) but the problem persists.

But I remember reading sth. about the Windows Media Player 9 needed as a prerequiste. Do I need one for Sonic Stage?

Since the checksum seemed to be correct I assume another download will lead to the same results. So I'll wait until my NE410 comes and will install Sonic Stage 1.5 - until I get another PC.

Btw: If iceeedtea hadn't made that build, I probably would still listen to my old Sony DD2 Walkman :wacky: So no matter if I get SS2 running or not (on my PC) -it motivated me to buy a NetMD! I'll keep you guys informed about the progress

Doesn't work for me either.

I am now trying it on a separate machine PIII 800 with a fresh install of W98SE and nothing else installed except SS2.0

It cannot transfer more than 5 tracks from a CD to my library without crashing and locking up, forcing a complete restart of the machine. Exactly the same fault as I had with it on my other machine.

I'm now too ****** off to worry anymore. NetMD is a pile of ***** as far as I'm concerned and the player is being returned for a full refund and I will get an iPod. Should have stuck with my original idea to get an IPod. Also I will NEVER buy from Sony again.

Sorry guys but I fear Minidisc is dead unless someone can quickly give Sony a HUGE kick up the **** to develop software that works

MODERATOR EDIT: Watch your language.

Well - it depends.

I installed iceeedtea's compilation on a windows XP home edition and it works like a charm  (Installed DX 9.0b before!)

I'm still trying to figure out, why it will not work on a Windows 98 SE.

Concerning the NetMD:

The sound is good (maybe fantastic, but I've got nothing else but some headphones to check) and it took me about 30 min to install Simple Burner to get some CDs on the MD. There seems no alternative to MD (and therefore for Sony  )

Weird. I'll give Win98SE a shot through VMWare sometime later and see what the problem is. I'll test both the original ISO copy and the trimmed. It could be a problem with the program itself, and not something that was removed.

For now, Windows 98SE users who want to use SonicStage are recommended to upgrade to something higher. Editing the installer thread to reflect this change until further notice.

I am a vetern of the MD software wars having logged (wasted) many hours making my MD work. Have used OpenMG JukeBox, RealOne (works OK when it works);the Nero/Simple Burner/Daemon combo rolleyes.gif

Even use a Creative Labs USB external sound card w/ SPDIF (optical link, real-time).

Today---I ripped every last shred of all things Sony MD from my Windows XP rig (2 hours labor, multiple reboots) and applied the "iceeedtea" SonicStage. Smoooooth!

I fired it up, fed it some tracks (WAVS, MP3s, CD and some long audio tracks I record to MP3 from Internet Radio---some 2 hours long) and it took everything I gave it.

Man, I'm sitting tall on this deal. Couldn't be more pleased. Thanks! "iceeedtea" Cudos!

Randy

Well, apologies to the moderator for the language in my last post but I am sure you will appreciate that having spent close to £200 for something that doesn't do what it is advertised to do, I am extremely exasperated. I have a new PC on order which will come with XP so have decided from other posts that this may be a W98SE problem and that I should wait to try it on the new PC. 28 day return period is running out though.

I tried again yesterday on the borrowed machine

Formatted HD with fresh reinstall of W98SE and SS2.0 but still it won't run properly. Copies 4 or 5 tracks then crashes - usually just a "this programn has caused an error and will be shut down" but sometimes (about 10%) a blue screen "fatal exception error" forcing a complete restart.

Once I've managed to get the whole disc from CD to my library it seems to be fine transferring fromn my library to MD so problem just seems to be the copying of CD's

Roll on the new m/c with XP
