I recently bought a mint condition sony MDS-501. this is an older audiophile (top quality model). It works great but none of the discs that I have recorded on my sony MZ-r37sp (portable) will play on it. I've even deleted a disc and started fresh recorded to it and i'm just getting "disc error" My only solution was to purchase brand new discs and it works fine but the disc I bought are the exact same as the old ones TDK-SG. Now I'm stuck with a bucket of disc's that wont record in the mds-501. What gives, I've been using MD's forever and never came across this. Neither of these recorders are using the lp and other time changing formats

PLEASE HELP

thanks in advance

yeah its reading writing great on brand new discs it just wont work with any of the old discs I recorded on my MZ-R37sp I got it on ebay, it was totally clean as close to brand new as you get. Keep in mind this model is from 1994 and my portable is 2000, was there a format change with the TOC or something like that

I did some research on some complaints that other people who own your unit have made and there's some similiar remarks, but nothing that would really assist in this situation. The good thing is that it works, just not on certain discs. I can understand how that would be frustrating, nonetheless.

One thing I did see was a fellow put a disc in when the unit was off, and let it stay off for a little while and then turned on the unit - and the disc played. Not saying that will work, but it's worth a shot.

Your unit is old indeed! It's from 1995 and the ATRAC codec has progressed quite a bit since ATRAC-2 [the version your unit employs]. I'm not really sure about your woes, though..maybe someone else will chime in?

Doesn't make sense to me how it'll record on some discs, but not others..even when they're the same brand! Must be nerve-racking.

p.s. You're welcome for the welcome. This place still needs a good bit of work, and we're terribly understaffed! I think I'm going to develop arthritis soon..

I've been reading up on toc cloning it sounds interesting, do you think that would apply to this situation, P.S. thanks a mil. for your help, its very generous of you.

I use my deck for 1-man-band stuff. I do a lot of gigs on the south florida coast so you can so i get a lot of "wear and tear from the salt air" they are not exactly built for road worthiness either, i've been through 3 in the last 4 years. All the previous models were flimsy but this unit is rock solid, It seems sony put their best foot forward back in the day. There isnt even a scratch on the feet of this thing, Its like finding a old 56 corvette in some old widows barn LOL.
