dmiller91
I bought a Sony m.d., although I had a DAT for years. I love how easy my md is to use, but I'm getting a lot of distortion, even on low sensitivity with my mic. I bought stealth mics and a battery pack. I've been reading about this on this formu. Are you saying I should run those mics into line in? Not that I think the md has a line in.... or is there something else I need to put in the chain to give me more control of the levels? Thanks! A440
If you're recording loud music put the battery box through Line In. It's the white jack (on Sonys at least) next to the mic jack. Or skip the battery box and use the headphone volume control trick. "Get a Radio Shack Headphone Volume Control, $5.99, a volume knob on a cord. Plug the mic into the jack [on the HVC], turn the volume all the way UP and plug it into your mic jack and you'll be able to record all but the loudest concerts without distortion. If there is distortion, you can turn it down like a level control." You'll have to experiment to see if it works better with low or high sensitivity--I use it on an MZ-N707 that doesn't have a low sensitivity setting. Battery box gives a richer but sometimes quieter recording. Don't combine battery box and HVC or you'll get a really muffled recording.
