Melchior
Hi, I'm new to MDs and am looking at an affordable solution for recording a few ambient sounds for a game I'm modding. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what MD recorder and mic would be suitable for recording some outdoor as well as indoor ambient sounds? I want to transfer the sounds onto my laptop (mic input) when I have recorded them. I want a fairly decent volume when recording and a decent sound quality. Doesn't have to be anywhere near perfect though. Don't want to spend any more than I need to, probably try to find stuff on ebay and I'm not too concerned about the music side of things really. It's mainly the sound recording I'm looking for. Any suggestions advice or alternatives very welcome, Thanks!
Christopher
Keen use for a MD recorder. Welcome to the forums. What's your exact budget?
Melchior
Probably about £100 = $179 Of course that could end up more or less as I learn a bit more about the different equipment. Thanks.
Christopher
I would suggest reading up on Hi-MD first, just to make sure you're not making the wrong decision. Otherwise, I would go for the Sharp IM-DR420, as it seems to be a great unit in that price range with fantastic functionality. I know they're about a dime a dozen in the UK, and are available online as well. Don't pay any more than 125 pounds. p.s. info about this unit: http://minidisc.org/part_Sharp_IM-DR400+DR...R410+DR420.html
Melchior
Thanks for the help! I'll look into it. Any thoughts on the sort of mic I could try?
Christopher
Hm..go take a look in the Live Recording forum [or just search]. There are some pretty informative threads already. Not much of a taper myself, although I will be once I get my Hi-MD unit. The only downside to recording with a MD unit is getting that recorded music off the MD. Some people have simplified this process with a deck/'shelf with digital out and a sound card with digital in, but unfortunately not everyone in the world can accept this configuration. The only other alternative is analog [and using a male-to-male stereo cable], which is fine if you know what you're doing volume wise [trial and error process, I tellsya], but I like to keep it digital - hence why I want Hi-MD, for it has uploading via USB in a faster than real-time scenario.
