mowestusa Posted May 25, 2004 Report Share Posted May 25, 2004 I just want to know if this is common. Do you get a little static or white noise when you play a song in LP2 or LP4? I just got my MZ-S1 and whenever I play a song there is static. What is interesting is that turning up the volume doesn't increase the noise which leads me to believe that it isn't coming from the recording. In fact if I turn the volume to 0 the sound is still there in the headphones. However if I push stop then the sound is not there at all. What do you guys think? Is this a problem with these Sony units? Is this just a result of the format. I don't have an MP3 player or anything else to compare it to, so that is why I'm wondering. To move the files onto my MD player/recorder I first use CDex (a freeware CD ripper) to get the files on my hard drive. I started doing mp3's but to get the better quality I have now ripped them as WAV's. Then I import them in to OpenMG, after that I Check-In the files as LP4's or LP2's. With the WAV files I should be getting the best quality, but it doesn't seem to matter. What is interesting is that the static I hear is always at the same level. In other words, if I turn up the volume I just hear the music louder, the static level doesn't increase. I have sensitive ears so I don't play the music loudly. I keep it at about 7-9 on the volume. At this level I can hear the static in the background. When I turn the volume off (turn it to 0) I don't hear the music at all, but I do hear the static once again at that constant level. However if I pause or stop the music then the static is gone completely and I hear complete silence. I guess I was wondering if this is just something that is common to MD players that when the playing mechanism is engaged you hear some static, kind of like the old tapes that you would hear a hiss at the same constant level whenever the playing mechanism is engaged. You could test it by playing a MD and then turning the volume off and see if you can still hear a little static. I don't think that it comes from the bit rates because the static doesn't get loader as I turn up the volume only the music gets louder. Perhaps this is just a problem for people with sensitive ears. I have some very nice $50 headphones from Roland that I use to edit a program for the radio, but those are supposed to be super sesitive so that static should be louder. Also if it were the headphones wouldn't there be noise when I have it paused or stopped? I'll try it though. I noticed that you have a MZ-S1. I went ahead and burned it to cd to see if it was there, and the static is still there. I have recorded fom my Sony mini-disc walkman recorder, via sound card, and burned cds in past, and have had good quality. Now, I have static. Any one else have problems with static? And no, there would be no static during pausing or stopping because no signal is being sent to the headphones. The stocks with the S1 are similar to the MZ-N10 stocks (fold up type) and they are unclean and muddy. I could definitely hear static with them on my N10.
