First, just wanted to say that this website is great! Lots of very good information and great forums. I have read several postings and I am looking for any helpful information on MD models that might fit my need (and budget). I am looking for the lowest price MD recorder that will have a mic input so I can record my guitar sessions. I assume that I will need about $200 based on research I did. Please reply to this post with some suggestions. So far, looks like The Sharp IM-DR420 might be a good option. What do you think? Also, what type of stereo microphone would be good? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The IM-DR420 would be a fine choice. Rather worryingly these units seem to be disappearing and may have become discontinued, so if you know where to get one, I'd snap it up. Don't go for the similar looking DR410 or 400 - these don't have a microphone input.

An alternative would be the Sharp MD-MT290, or in fact most Sharps with a mic-input. The Sony MZ-N710 would be OK in the budget range, but perhaps not quite so good as the Sharps for your purpose.

Best to stay away from Sony mics - they look good but have a too limited frequency range for music (typically 50Hz-15kHz). You want a mic with a range of at least 20Hz-20kHz. Vivanco make such a mic, or go to sound professionals..

hey

just a quick question

ive been using mz-r700 & powered stereo microphones from giant squid to record live concerts and jungle noises (which both came out excellant quality)

looking to upgrade my md, and not including hi-md which of these would be best to upgrade to:

Sharp IM-DR420

Sony mz-n710

sony mz-n910

the sharp one seems to be a highly recomended one, and the n910 seems to be better than the n710 in that it has the Line Out option.

im quite fancying the n910 but what would be a good choice?

or should i wait for the hi-md release?

cheers
