Do you think that Sony should change the thread on their clip to a modern standard 5/8-inch threaded hole microphone clip hole (preferred, although 3/8-inch is also common and might be acceptable)?

    • Yes, I want to use my Sony microphone stand with modern standard equipment!

    • No, I prefer to make my life difficult by making my mic stands out of ½" plumbing pipe, searching for vintage mic stands, or paying too much for little adapters!

Ever since I got Sony portable one-point stereo microphone (model number ECM-MS907, found here I wondered, "How the $%&@ do I attach this to a microphone stand? The hole is too big!" Again, leave it to Sony, you know, the company that uses only Memory Sticks in their Flash products (and they are the only company that makes or uses them), to make a microphone clip that is almost impossible to attach to a familiar microphone stand. Well, I did find one use for that threaded hole, for those of you who work with plumbing often enough.

Seriously now, I did find only two sites that sell adaptors for this hole. Sony must be out of their minds to be using an outdated microphone thread standard. Apparently it was used on old RCA microphones, and is still used on ½-inch inner-diameter metal plumbing pipes. The adaptor, which converts the familiar 5/8-inch fine thread on most microphone stands to the BF 1/2 (BF ½) thread (as Sony refers to it), is made by a company called Atlas (or AEA), model number AD1. It might be out of production.

As of the date of this post, this site sells the adapter for $20 US:

Thanks a bunch!

I guess I should also mention, I found out that although BigDMC charges more than Odyssey Pro Sound for the adapter, BigDMC's base shipping rates are way less, so if you are just interested in the adapter, BigDMC is cheaper. However, if you are interested in buying more, you should definitely shop at both and compare to see what you want to get and what the grand total will cost.
