Lobengula
Sitting in my Tokyo hotel room, watching CNN(yetch), I have 24 hours to make a decision as to what MD to buy. Why I need one?, my girlfriend is a singer, she has this great gig coming up, and I said that I'd record it for her - talk about pressure!!. You'd also think that here in the-land-of-sony people would know about Hi-MD, all I get is a blank stare and a sucking of breath through clenched teeth, even when accompanied by my most modest bow. Earlier on today, zooming off to the LAOX store armed only with a scribbled note from my Japanese compatriot (heck knows what THAT said), I tracked down a Sharp IM-DR80, MD-DR77, Sony MZN-920, and some others not worth mentioning because they were Aiwa and Kenwood. Well, to get back to my digitallema, I need to record a live show, in a small room ( seats 50-70 people), ideally I'd be recording from either a digital or analog output from a TC reberb machine, or an analog output from a Peevey 600 mixer, all the musicians will be plugged in, keyboard, violin, drums, and a horn. The show will be about an hour long, so one disk might do the trick, I don't know. If you have any ideas, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance. KJ_Palmer
I'd personally go for the N920 as the latest Sony recorder, as I like the Sony sound. The DR77 would undoubtedly be just as good though, in a Sharp-y sort of way. The DR80 might not be so good if you want to use a line or optical in. These are located on the charging stand (there is mic-in only on the main body).
Lobengula
Hi Kevin, Thank's for such a prompt reply, I'll take your advice and go for the Sony, I have so much other sony stuff, it's laughable. One thing that I have noted in the last 6 months is the drop in available MD equipment on the shelves in NRT. I have not been involved in MD until recently (1 week), but it seems to have certain advantages over MP3 players, etc. The only drawback is the upload from the player to the PC - it has to be in analog format- whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty", Sony, and the rest, assumes that we are pirates. Sorry, just blowing off steam. Thanks again for your input, and will get back to you about how the gig went. CJ
KJ_Palmer
Great, enjoy the gig CJ. I'd buy the N920 myself if I didn't have too much MD gear already... BTW, you can get MD decks with optical outputs for the best 'uploading' quality, not to mention the new Hi-MD units which are tantalisingly just around the corner... Anyway, let us know how you get on...

KJ_Palmer
CJ, well the uploading issue is very thorny indeed. Mostly down, I think, to Sony's copyright infringing worries (or paranoia - as a major record company?). For me, and probably most users MD does what I want it to very well, within it limits, so we're pretty happy with it. Unfortunately the new Hi-MD devices seem to add even more levels of alleged piracy-defeating DRM protection, so the situation might even worsen in the pessimistic view. Anyway the N10 is a fine 'flagship' recorder, top quality; old but not really outdated. The ATRAC encoding on the N10 would be as good as on the N920. The N920 would just sound that little bit better through the headphone out I guess because of the digital amp. The E810 is, I believe a playback only unit. I can't really comment, but overall I have a very good opinion about the sound quality and build of higher-level (Japan-made) Sony equipment. Christopher
If NetMD wasn't really a necessity for you I'd opt for the DR77, as it'd probably have the best sound out of all of them. Also, what's wrong with Aiwa and Kenwood? :rasp:
