paulmontoya
Ive spent a few hours on this forum and others trying to understnd whether I can do what I want - produce near-braodcast quality recordings (interviews) using a microphone (I I realise that mic quality is a key factor but that seems low down the list of issues), edit the interviews and upload to a PC where I can burn a CD. From what I have read (I dont undertsand the techie stuff) this does not seem possible other than thru a cable which goes from the MD headphone socket to the PC (via USB?) There is also a lot of traffic about software which smooths this process - is there a general view on what is best (for quality results). High speed transfer would be great, but my priorities are editing and ultimate sound quality once burnt onto a CD. I was thinking of going for the MZ-N910 as a mid-price unit, but noticed the MZ-NH1 for about £50 more. Worth the extra??? - tho pl note that whilst I love music my purchase is primarily for microphone recording !!!! Not feasible thru "traditional" MD....or so it seems thru HD MD ????. I did speak to SONY helpdesk today (he didnt mention HD) but did say that uploading theu headphone socket was the only option. Is there a definative listing somewhere which would help me to understand the way of doing this? At the moment I am doing something vaguely similar thru my laptop sound recorder via XP and burning the result onto a CD - NOWHERE near high quality...... but done just to understand the process of CD creation. :wacky:
jadeclaw
You want to wait for a Hi-MD-recorder. In your case, every Hi-MD recorder is useable, except the NH600, as that has no microphone input. By using an Hi-MD unit, you avoid the soundcard. Two ways to bring your sound into the computer: playback via USB (realtime), you can record that with a Soundeditor or direct transfer using the supplied Software (SonicStage2) which is much faster. And export from that. Oh, and forget the Windows soundrecorder - It sucks like a black hole. Use something decent, like Goldwave or Audacity to edit your soundfiles. Or check, what has been included with your CD-Writer or soundcard. The N910 is a NetMD and these cannot upload via USB, so that one would only go via phone out -> LineIn. And you don't want that for quality reasons. Because of the upload capability, Hi-MD is ideal for your purpose. Btw, if the microphone is good enough, you will get above broadcast quality, in fact MD outperforms easily FM-Radio and most digital channels as well...(SP/Hi-SP) Personally, I would take the NH900, it seems more resistant to rough handling compared to the fragile looking NH1.
