i picked up a mz-n1 last year and after hearing about the new 1gb players, i was thinking about becoming a minidisc lifer - getting a hi-md home system, car player, portable stereo, etc. however, before taking the plunge, i want to know how long the portables last. i can't afford to lay out $2-300 every two years. i've noticed one member who has a list as long as my arm of devices he's used... i've got a portable cd player that's been through a fairly rough life that works beautifully and i want to know... is it worth it?

Welcome..

Yeah, I think it's worth it. It'd be a better idea to invest in a higher-end unit as the lesser-valued ones seemingly have more issues [of course, this isn't true in all situations]..

The real key to all this is keeping care of your unit; avoiding "drops", keeping it dust free periodically, etc etc. The more you "baby" it, the longer it'll live. I'd expect at least 3 - 5 years with proper care, but that's subject to change if you use it excessively [i.e. the recording or playback head could wear out].
