MZ-N707 in yogurt

My MD, MZ-N707, fell into a liter of yogourt about a month ago when I was out travelling. It stoped working and was completely dead. So, I went to a service-guy in Peru with a friend who spoke spanish. The service-guy wanted to take a look at it so we went and came back in two hours. When we were back the MD seemed to work again and it played a disc correctly. He said he had replaced some chips inside.

However, he also said that it wasn't possible to record anymore because he needed more time, which we didn't have at that point. So, we went from there, pretty satisfied that it worked again.

This is what it looks like right now:

However, one thing that supprised me now when I'm back home is that cable at (1) is cut off. What would be his reason for that? Another strange thing is that some components at (2), for example D6, D7, D5 and others, aren't there... I downloaded the service manual for N707 but the schematic for this board was not included, so I don't know if they are supposed to be there or not. Could anyone with a N707 help me to check it out?

I remember that there were another MZ-N707 on his table and now I think that he could have taken some of my components and put them in the other one. But maybe I'm just too suspicious smile.gif

Is it possible to solder cable (1) back to normal in some way or do I have to replace the whole thing? Recording is mostly what I use my MD for so I need to fix it in some way.

Also, the 'volume-up' button (3) doesn't work very good sometimes. Is it possible to fix this in some way?

Best regards,

Fredrik

Hello at you,

You are lucky I had an open MZ-n707 in front of me wink.gif only in part...

According to my MD, it really isn't normal that the cable is cut. I'm not an expert in MD components though I think it could be where comes your recording problem. It can be the magnetic head used to read (yeah, I may be saying total non-sense on this, it's only a thought. Correct me if I'm wrong). That's only what I can say for the cable.

For 2), your PCB looks identical to mine. Here's a pic to show what mine looks like:

Sorry for the crappy details, my cam isn't the best one wink.gif

For 3), I can't really help you. I have a problem right now about my buttons too. It's like if my Group button was always pressed or something like this giving me a NV Error each time I presses a button. This unit seems to have problems with the head phone jack AND the buttons sad.gif

Maybe trying a NV Reset could help (refer to http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/servi...ice_manual.pdf)

I hope my replie was useful to you. Good luck.

I don't know if it's possible to solder the cable. I hope it is

You're welcome smile.gif

Maybe you should consider checking the ribbon linking the display PCB to the main unit. Mine looks damaged and it could be the source of the problem I have with my unit as it could be yours.

Also, check every main connection (the one that clips to another component of the MD). I hope it is only a bad connection issue =)

You can try to solder the ribbon back together, but most likely it won't work. The more logical option would be to replace the ribbon with new wires. In the picture it looks like two leads on the main CB. If you use a light, flexible wire it is possible. If the ribbon is attached directly to the recording head and will be moving around then you will have to make sure you use some type of wire that wan't cause much resistence or the head will not move.

I have heard of using cheap headphone wire to do the trick on portable cd players. Otherwise the only way to fix it is to take it to a repair shop, usually costing more than is justifiable. Just don't use a singke core wire becouse it will wear and break. I have heard of the recording head ribbin breakng, especially when the record head is attached to the same carriage as the playback head. This causes the recording head ribbon stress while recording and during playback.

Hopefully you can bypass ribbon with a good, super light , and flexible wire.
