pbonewell
This my first post so be gentle: I have a Sony MDS JE780 deck and a trusty MZ-R900 portable. I only recently got around to playing around with the Net MD function on the deck hoping to benefit from quick loading of compilations to MD for portable listening. I tend to stick to LP2 as I find that recordings made at this compression level give a good compromise between quantity and quality. But, through my HiFi a real time analogue recording at LP2 gives far better results than a Net MD recording at the same level - in fact the digital copy is very disappointing in the sound quality dept. I'm assuming that it comes down to components: though I don't have a high-end HiFi as such the components are going to be of a better audiophile quality than the lap top that I used for the experimental upload. Is there any reason why there should be such a disparity in sound quality and, can I expect more out of my Net MD set up or am I going to have to stick to the inconvenience of realtime analogue recording? Christopher
Perhaps you should try realtime digital recording. Maybe buy this [http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?p=24078] and use it accordingly for good digital dubs?
jadeclaw
Hmm, now that got me thinking... Methinks, that the encoder in Sonicstage is inferior compared to the Hardware encoder in a deck. It seems, that I have to repeat the comparison I've done before when I get my Hi-MD unit... And thanks for the soundcard-tip, it's the cheapest Envy24-card I've seen so far. Btw, VIA claims true bit playback via Digital out for this chip...

Remember everyone, that all encoding in this scenario is done in the software itself and then transferred to the disc. If he were to do a 1:1 digital dub, I believe all encoding would be done on the deck, hence a higher-quality recording.

Thanks folks -I must admit that I haven't got round to trying the optical link between my CD player and MD deck - another comparison that I need to make (I record off my turntable too hence the preference for analogue input at present). At least digital to digital would preserve track marks - but, looks like I'm stuck with realtime whichever way that I go about it! PS I didn't think the check in check out scenario would be too much of a problem until I wanted to wipe an MD to use for something else and the deck wouldn't let me. :whatever:
jadeclaw
I strongly suggest to use the optical link. It will improve the soundquality further as the complete D/A-A/D conversion cycle is removed. Btw, most CD-Players send the trackmarks with the sounddata, so that these are placed perfectly...

There are no check in/check out limitations with SS2.
