 Hi, this is the first time i've owned an MD player and have had it since xmas and i must say was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality that this little box produces. I do have an excellent ear when listening to sounds & on using this device, bass aint bad & is deep when using the sony headfones frequency response ranging from 6 - 23000hz that is what gives you that LF bass whilst maintaining the mid and soft top notes, wins my ears everytime.

But however it does lack sound volume which is a pity.

But i will say there is an option for the listener that does not like soft rich deep bass, Use the headfones that comes with the Net MD. Ok the bass is not there as much and it does sound a lot sharper in sound as the standard headfones are more mid to high end frequency response & this is better for the louder ear preference i guess both are very clear sounding in different ways.

At the end of the day ( my preference ) downloading a cd through an optic cable off of a cd recorder or hi-fi is by far the best sound you will get ok hardly no songs on disk but who cares Mini Discs are cheap enuff so why sacrifice sound quality for quantity.

As for ipod and other mp3 players i've yet to hear one so i cannot comment about that in my opinion however i am looking for a player of superior sound quality with more volume which i must say is the only flaw in the MD but hey i spose you can't have it all.

Welcome.

You may want to look into employing some better headphones, as the stock headphones that come with any unit are usually crap.

Look here for some headphone recommendations:

Look here for more about units that have a better overall sound than most average units [such as the one you're employing]:

Thank you for the reply reguarding the headfone scenario, however the standard headfones are rather crappy sounding which is why i use the inner ear type which does seeem to give me a better bass. But i am a little confused, i have clicked on the link that you have supplied and just really want to know the bigger headfones can i use them on the md and are they better than the various little high range sony headfones that i have as i am looking to improve the sound volume and music on both ends of the scale meaning low and high end sounds?

Hehe.

If CD is only 20 - 20,000 Hz, why does it matter what frequency response your earphones have? The important thing is how flat the frequency response curve is, not the range. It could be 23,000 Hz at -6dB for all you know, which means you wouldn't hear a thing in that region. I'm guessing you're using EX71s, and that's hardly classified as delivering 'LF bass whilst maintaining the mid and soft top notes'. EX71s have supressed mids to give the treble and bass a boost, but this is handled so poorly that it tends to sound sharp.

Sony's 'high range' headphones are the CD3000s and R10s, and both sell for way above USD350.

mellow.gif In response to your reply reguarding headphones, no i am not using ex71's and i understand what you are saying all i was stating is that the type of phones that i am using seems to deliver a more rich sounding lf bass whilst maintaining mid and high notes. At the end of the day i am not a specialist in frequencys but i do know that compared to the crappy standard headphones i had these ones delivered what seemed to be missing in the first place but are not the best. What i wanted to know was the best phones to get not closed ear type.
