Does the line-out of your laptop suck like a black hole.

Do you need optical out on a machine, that you are not allowed to open (Warranty etc...)?

Then this might be the solution:

The Turtle Beach Audio Advantage.

It is an USB-plug with optical out/Line out.

The whole thing is cheap as well: just 30 bucks.

It is here:

On a sidenote: Europeans don't need to order, Turtle Beach ships with UPS-Express, that cost $72,-- alone...

I don't think this is a good solution for recording music from computer. It seems this unit can only output 48k Hz signal which is not good for most music source at 44.1 Hz. If you have a desktop, I strongly recommed Chaintech AV710 optical output as cheap and hiagh quality source for MD recording.

Even for laptop, there are some better quality USB options such as Audiotrak Optoplay, M-audio Sonica etc which are not sonsiderably more expensive than this unit.

There are some great recommendations in this thread for all shapes and sizes. It looks like jadeclaw's recommendation is the most compact [and probably functions somewhat well], whereas the aforementioned Audiotrak Optoplay [with it's 5 ft usb cord] has it's quirks, and the M-Audio Sonica is a good base for laptop [and possibly home if you felt inclined] audio. Maybe you guys should list other options, and I could consolidate them into a list and post it into the Live Recording forum as a sticky [preferbly ones with digital I/O], and here as well?
