Ghuun Posted July 31, 2004 Report Share Posted July 31, 2004 Hi all, I'm brand new to this forum btw recently my trusty Sharp MD MT180 got stolen , so now i'm in the market for something new. The choice stands between the sony 510 and the 710. I can get them for the same price, the 710 a bit cheaper actually. My question to you is whether there is any real difference between the two apart from table-charger-thingy? I read posts about the 710 being really low on volume, is that the same for the 510? I checked out the sony site and I can't find the 710 anywhere only the 707, will that be problem when it comes to downloads etc? many thx in advance Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It is a UK model, therefore it has to abide by some inane French safety law about maximum volume on portable devices. The headphone amp in the MZ-N710 is 1.2mW+1.2mW, while North American models have a 5mW+5mW headphone amp. The MZ-NF810 (a sort of US version of the N710) is almost identical to the N710, except for the presence of an FM-band tuner. The MZ-N510 has the normal 5mW+5mW amp, but it doesn't have a microphone jack. If you don't need a mic jack, I'd get the N510 over the N710... It is now a general consensus among the medical community, that a prolonged exposure to soundlevels above 85db will damage the ears and lead to permanent hearing loss. In other words, even the weakest MD-player out there is unhealthy to one's hearing, if cranked up to the limit... I've gone to concerts where the decibel level was waaaay up there and didn't suffer anything worse than a sore throat and ringing ears for a day or two. The level of ambient sound at my job, in a hot kitchen with all sorts of ovens, stoves, mixers and the like going on (not to mention shouting, cursing, customer conversations, etc.) is probably pretty well up there, too. As aeriyn said, impedance plays a part, and let's not forget that sound is logarithmic in terms of power. To have something go twice as loud would require approximately ten times the amount of power. It's been said that most people can handle anywhere between 8 to 16 hours of listening with 85dB SPL at 1m. Anyway, hope you like your N710...Those numbers directly affect how it sounds. >.>; About the N710... try finding a pair of headphones with as low impedance as possible (I think 16 ohms is as low as you can go).
