Hello All --

I joined this group to learn a little bit and get a hopefully get a question answered. And this thread seems like the right place!

Here is my goal: To record a live FM broadcast to MD - strictly with battery power - while in attendance, on-site, at a convention.

In the past I have done this with a Walkman on batteries and my old MD deck on electric. But new rules don't allow me to use electric.

What all-in-one unit or combination of devices would allow me to record direclty to MD? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I am technologically handicapped (as you can see by y e-mail address) and need all the advice I can get!

Please e-mail with your suggestions, if you like...

Thanks.

What about a portable FM radio, a male-to-male stereo analog cable and a MD recorder with mic in? That should do the trick. This seems like alot to lug around, though.

I did see a while ago a portable flash player with an FM/AM radio that could record in the manner in which you seek. I'll look around and see if I can find it again.

Yesterday, I recorded the football game from a radio to my MD recorder. I used a small Sony digital AM/FM radio SRF-M37V ($30 at BestBuy) and a short stereo patch cord (stereo miniplug to stereo miniplug available at Radio Shack and BestBuy). I picked the SRF-M37V for its sensitivity, great sound quality, long battery life, and a hold button to lock the keys. I plugged the headphone jack of the radio to the line input (not mic) of the MD recorder and turned the radio volume to about two-thirds. I plugged my headphones into the MD output and left them plugged in to provide a good FM antenna back to the radio. Then I pressed record on my MD. I normally use the LP4 format for radio recording. That lets me record a football game and the postgame comments on one MD blank.

 can you actually plug a 'stereo miniplug to stereo miniplug' cable to the OPTICAL line-in to record anything?

there's no need for a special cable or something? unsure.gif

If you look at the jack again, you'll see it labeled OPTICAL/LINE IN.

Optical in and line-in.
