Abouna
Hello all, I am not only a novice but not an MD user (I am a fan however). My brother however is a long time user and fan of the format. Unfortunately his old Sharp 702 reecently failed. In an attempt to replace it for him I ordered the newer Sharp M-DR420S. Upon its arrival we both agreed it was a rather sharp downgrade from the old 702, features not withstanding. The old unit was heavy and solid, the new one just th opposite, too much plastic. Knowing nothng about Sharp MDs I was hoping you all here could direct me towards a good replacement for the 702. Used/Older are OK. Mic IN is essential. Any recommendatios would be appreciated. Christopher
Welcome, Abouna. Have you even listened to this unit and/or tried recording with it? If not, I find it hard to believe two blokes got rid of a unit without even listening or recording with it.
Abouna
Thanks for responding Kurisu, The recording qaul. was not an issue. He is no newbie and is big fan of Sharp. However he is looking for something more akin to his older 702. Heavier and better made. He could probably figure this all out himself but I am trying to do it myself. Any suggestions? Christopher
Plenty of suggestions, but first I need his maximum budget.
Abouna
OK, I spent $229 on the 420. Would like to stay under that.
Christopher
Sorry I took so long to reply; been working on the site alot lately. Anyway, do you prefer a non-MDLP/NetMD unit? It seems like you favor the old school toughness of units from long ago compared to the seemingly fragile construction of today's models. I think I have what you want in mind.. Abouna
Thanks. Not sure about the importance of MDLP. What have you got in mind?
Christopher
I think you should go for the MD-DR7. Was the sound quality of the DR420 sufficent for you? If I'm not mistaken, it should have rivaled what you were employing before. I believe that the build quality of the DR7 would satisfy. http://minidisc.org/part_Sharp_MD-DR470+DR480+DR7.html Where are you located? I can find a good e-tailer for you to use. Abouna
Kirisu, Thanks again. It seems you are the only one here ;-) After some research this does seem like a good choice. Unfortunately it also seems hard to find. Minidisco seems not to carry it niether does PM. I have never ordered from Audiocubes.com and am a bit leery of thier pricing and policies. Any suggestions? Christopher
Where are you located? Audiocubes is a great store and a good friend of the board. Most people who usually order from them have great success and they're customer service is absolutely fantastic.
Abouna
Iowa. I have had no exp. with Audiocubes. I was worried mostly about returns. Have you had any experience with returns? Is this where you recommend?
Abouna
Another question: Does Audiocubes.com ever issue any discounts/coupons?
Christopher
Not too often, unfortunately. Audiocubes is the cheapest place to get this unit, unless you scout eBay or get one secondhand. About their return policy, just send them an e-mail and they'll answer all your questions. I've rarely come across a dissatisfied Audiocubes customer, espesically with their MD portables. If you do choose to buy from them, please tell me so I can generate a link so a small percent of the sale will benefit the forums [with no extra charge to you]. Christopher
btw, have you seen this? http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=5588
Abouna
Kurisu, OK, I decided to buy from Audiocubes. Unfortunately it was a no go. I tried to open an account. Everytime I tried I was told my email address seemed to be invaild! I decided to write them an email via thier inquiry form and was told the same thing! Don;t know where to go from here. Guess it will be hard for the forum to get a kickback if I can;t place an order or even contact them.
Christopher
This is troubling. I would suggest e-mailing admin@audiocubes.com with what product your interested in, along with that forums.minidisc.org was the affiliate. I would still suggest you go with them - they must be having some temporary woes.
Abouna
Well I tried the email you posted. Bounced right back with "this address no longer accepts mail". I am becoming more convinced that buying from them may not be so prudent. The problem is, no one lese seems to have the DR7.
Christopher
I noticed on the T-Board that you were able to sign up with them. Your spam filter seemed to be the issue, eh? Did you already order from them?
Abouna
Actually, no I am not on that board. However, via your prost here I did go over there and read that thread. I am going to try that solution. Thanks again.
Christopher
Erk, my fault. Please leave a reply here before you order, though.
Abouna
Kurisu, Whoops, sorry. I already ordered. I did however add a message to my order asking that they credit minidisc.org. Do you think that will work?
Christopher
Did they ever reply to you if they credited forums.minidisc.org?
Abouna
No. I will mention it again when they ship. It seems the DR7 is backordered.
Christopher
Really? That's uncommon as it's still a fairly popular unit. The DR77 hasn't really gained much backing yet and the DR7 is a very cost effective preformer. You know, to think of it..I think that a few other e-tailers don't have them in stock anymore either. Wonder what's going on..
