billythekid
hey all, i have encountered a problem with my mz-r500. i cannot get the screen to diaplay the track info or acknowledge an MD. the service mode will operate fine with all the display features coming up. even the volume will display on the screen but the track time and even the 'hold' display will not. compounding this problem is that the md will now not play. it whirrs loudly trying to read the disc. and then displays nothing, and wont play. i've taken it apart and everything seems fine. the only thing that looks a bit odd is the distance between the optical head and the disc when a md is in, but from my understanding this changes as the disc plays/records. i also could not get the disc to spin when disassembled but i think this was because i didn't have the little switch on the side of the md taped up. any assistance on the matter would be greatly appreciated as i don't mind tinkering with it at the moment. thanks also to pureangst for the info on taking mds apart (http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=4712&highlight=md+player). it was a great help. anyone wishing to tinker with their md should read this guide. Christopher
Yes, and also the various inaccuracies within the display. Perhaps it can help others who will see this diagnosis the issue better.
billythekid
are there any specs out there for the gap from the optical head to the disc surface?
jadeclaw
If it helps, the Service Manual is onsite: http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/servi...vice_manual.pdf

billythekid
upon closer inspection, its seems that the disc is not spinning when play is pressed. the whirring sound i was talking of now seems like it might be the spindle not driving the disc. any techies out there know what causes this? is it easily fixable? billythekid
ok. i've got the jist of it now. what is happening as the optical head (ie the one that reads the disc....little blue optical lens) is making the noise. as it moves in and out it makes the whirring sound that i was hearing. at the same time, the recording head (the one that slides along the chassis) moves along its path, but only on certain mds. some mds will spin for a while, some not at all. does anyone know what is wrong with it? i am still getting no display. the last error that is entered in the service mode is low battery error, and before that is a data reading error. please help...... i don't know whats wrong
