New user looking for a MD for recording ambient sound -help!

Hi, I'm both new to this forum and MD in general, so would appreciate any useful advice. More specifically I'm looking for a MD model that can be used to make ambient recordings using an external mic set-up. I'm not looking for advice on recording/mic technique, just about models of MD recorders that can potential make quality (mono/stereo) recordings (with the right mic etc.) I'm not bothered about Hi-MD, or Net MD or anything other than the usability and quality of recording (and transfer via line-out). Helpful suggestions welcome, including any older models as I can always search ebay. I gather Sharp models are particularly useful because you can alter the gain while still recording. Thanks in advance, I hope to join the legion of MD users and fans very shortly.

I believe most recorders have manual recording level adjustment while recording from the microphone source.

Anyhow. As for units to suggest.

Sharp MD-DS7 or Sony MZ-R900. Maybe even Sony MZ-N10, although you would not use the NetMD functionality as this would be a unit for recording purposes rather than listening purposes.
