Three times now I have taken my MD to live events. Using Sony R-900 and Sony lapel mic and shirt with pocket.

Three times now the MD has partial recording of something. It works well at my desk but somehow placing the MD in my shirt pocket something wrong gets pressed, and earlier tracks get erased or overwritten.

What settings to you use: Record from End. ??

Then how do you prevent accidently starting and stopping the MD for the next 10-20 minutes? Lock doesn't seem to prevent this, only the last recording. Maybe. Donno.

Shirt pocket? Is there a neck-strap pouch which works best?

For reliability, I have resorted to using my digital camcorder which works flawlessly where allowed, but I got the MD for it's size convenience. Perhaps I'm just meant for big buttons and displays which don't need glasses to read.

On units that don't automatically start with a new track after the last track [numerically] on the disc, you -MUST- press "end search" first, then record. Otherwise you will be recording over whatever track the unit was sitting at beforehand.

Also, most MD recorders have a 'hold' switch. Turning 'hold' on disables all of the controls on the unit itself.

The MZ-R900 lets you set it to Record from End as default. Here's how, from the Equipment Browser entry on this site:

How to Set Rec-Posi: If you wish to avoid overwriting the currrent contents of an MD, do the following procedure. All new material will then be recorded from the end of the current contents.

1. While the recorder is stopped, press the jog lever, flip the lever repeatedly until "Rec-Posi" flashes in the display, and then press the lever again.

2. Flip the jog lever repeatedly until the "From End" flashes in the display and then press the lever.

There is a Hold switch on the back of the MZ-R900. When you're recording, put it on Hold after you start to Record. You may also want to tape the battery slot shut in case that is opening in your pocket, a problem I had with the MZ-R900.
