Happy birthday m8

Ahhhh..... nothing like the smell of newly unwrapped leather.  :ol_biggrin:  I am sure it will go away in time.

Screen protector sheets are fairly cheap.  I am using one made for color PDA screen  which I spend $10(for a pack of 12) some time back.  Vaio screen looks a little sharper without but still very nice.  As for the case, I go cheap with my old Zing neoprene camera bag.  It fits like a glove.  I will treat myself to a good set of headphones with the $ saved.

haha thank you! Okay so where can I get myself that 12 pack of screen protectors?

I picked up a pack of Fellowes WriteRIGHT PDA screen protector from either CompUSA or OfficeDepot 3 years ago in a clearance bin. I am not sure exact same item is even still available today. You will prob. find similar stuff in PDA section still but not sure about the cost. PDA screens have also gotten more sophisticated and so have the screen protectors over past 3 years, may cost you a bit more these days.

I'm still waiting for the PDAir case. I won't see the lack of a screen protector as a fault of the case since I enjoy looking at the screens directly anyway. I had been reading the reviews on the headphones/earphones and I like the portability of the IEM, but they are expensive! I was thinking on spending about 40 dollars but they are way out of my price range. It seems from what I am reading that the Sony MDR-EX71SL are good especialy for its bass reproduction and frequency range (6Hz~23kHz) this sounds like good specs to me and add to that some sound isolation. What do you think should I click the Buy button? I like the included MDR-838 from the VAIO Pocket, they have good mids and highs, but in order to hear the lows you have to painfully stick them in your ears. Does anyone else have this MDR-EX71SL with the VAIO Pocket?

People have love-hate relations with these EX71's.

I have a set of EX71 in black. EX71's are very bass heavy and suitable as a party headphone, if you want balance and accruacy EX71's are NOT it. They are very comfortable to wear once you find the right size gaskets(Sony gives you 3 sizes in the box) and provide some isolation. Isolation is not very tight in noisy situations like airplanes and subways trips, they may be ok in moderately noisy situation or like in quiet library where you don't want others to hear your music. They are not the most sensitive headphones either especially with portables with modest amp output(like man of today's MD players and small HD units such as Vaio Pocket), I usually have to push the volume 5-10 clicks higher than usual. In noisy situations, I find myself wanting more volume even after I have maxed out on the player. Not so with my other isolation cans like Shure E2.

A few years back, Sony EX7x line was the only decent affordable isolation phones but today there are other alternatives from Sharp( Creative Labs), Panasonic and Shure. I personally would not spend more than $20-25 (new) for these EX71s but this may be just me.

the ex71 in white have a slightly thicker plastic coating on the wires. it may make a dif. in product life as some users have reported that wiring in the cable, rather than at the conection points on the bud has broken.

as for pics i meant more IRL pics of the pdair rather than you posing with a tote. i have a rounded life outside of the internet & have even seen attractive ladies in the street before.

Just got my Vaio and charged 6 hours.

Can somebody give out the sucessful self instruction step by step?

From after charging, to firmware/software upgrading, to registration/authorization, to connect.com for free 50 songs, to play the first tune. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. So from your your reply I can assume that the Sony's are "muddy" right? If that's the case the sony buds will pass this time. I had been reading also a lot of stuff on the Shure E2c's and they are affordable enough (I had seen them for 50 bucks or so. If that means better listening experience I guess I will just order them instead of the EX71's. I barealy got the reply from PDair and I should be exoecting the case soon. I was interested in the belt clip since I always have my pockets full (maybe I should star weaing cargos, hehe) since I have my cell, my PDA my wallet and so on... I just thought that the thread is so funny, I have no problem in looking at one of chenfufur's pics of her with a tote having a wire from the VAIO pocket hanging out, hehe.

Most of my music is on a computer with USB 1.0 and running Windows ME.  Will I be able to use the VGF-AP1L with this computer?  I'm not concerned with slow transfer rates, I just want to make sure things will work.

Technically, you should have no problem using the VGF-AP1L with Windows ME. The only problem in terms of stability is with SonicStage. To my knowledge, SonicStage works best with a XP based system. Nonetheless, I would highly advise you to upgrade your OS system to XP Pro SP2.

Sure thing. Muddy sounds too negative, EX71's are very good for certain type of music listening. Portable headphones with small footprint are full of compromises though. At about 50 bucks, Shure E2's are excellent isolation headphones. I would say E2's are definitely a step above EX71's. Better fit-and-finish, better isolation and sounds great with proper equalization. Sounds very nice on Vaio Pocket IMHO.

And yeah.... I am still waiting to see chenfufur's pic with Vaio Pocket in her lovely tote. I think it will complement Ishi's Vaio Pocket pictorial great deal here. :ol_lol:

Windows 2000 with latest service pack(sp4) also works very nicely with SonicStage 3.1 for me(and hopefully with 3.2).

If you were to setup and use SS 3.1 on Windows ME machine, I would at least do a OS partition backup as a pre-caution before starting to lay down all the necessary components and SS3.1 itself. Worse case, you can revert back to old(previous) state and minimize downtime.

Hi, there

I used SS2.3 with windows XP. And no one single problem with music transfer, connect.com registration, computer authoriztion and so on. Since SS2.3 was designed for Vaio VGF-AP1L, I think it should be the most stable version of SS for it, if you don't use SS to rip cd to mp3. Please correct me if I am wrong. I would say the newest may not always be the best fit.

One issue I have though, is about the chinese display in SS and the player. By using Ishi's method, Using regedit+Microsoft AppLocale, SS2.3 shows all my songs title in Chinese perfectly. But after I transfer them to my VGF-AP1L, most of the characters show up correctly, while some of them show as "?".

Why VGF-AP1L can't show the chinese characters 100%, while SS does that before transfer? Anyone has tried to solve this and been sucessful?

Sorry if this doesn't belong to this topic. But it is the hottest topic in this forum right now.

Remember, the VAIO Pocket will support Chinese language texts as long as it's within the current kanji library. That's why some Chinese text will be displayed as "?" Please note this apply to all Sony ATRAC based device.

Yes, I know it only supports texts within the kanji library. But isn't SS supported by the same library? Why SS can show those texts correctly? Is it the windows coding that the SS is based on supports the texts rather than the Kanji library?

Anyway, I am pretty happy about having 100% on SS and about 80% on Vaio, which has exceeded my expectation.

Yes, that is quite right. You can view all Chinese texts within a Windows environment but once it's in the VAIO Pocket, it's based on existing kanji library.

Thanks, Ishi. I did get a lot of information from the posts you put on the forum. I love my VAIO and am enjoying it.

By the way, are you in Boston? :ol_lol:

Hi! My name is Tamim. I found out about minidisk.org in google while researching for the player...and the pictorial thread from there lead me here :D

I just purchased mine from Ebay, its brand new, with remote and everything (no cases though) for $227 (comes out to be $258 with shipping to canada and insurence)

Cant wait till I get it early next week, finally my minidisk (MZ-N510) gets to rest in peace :D.

If some of you are still looking to buy it, its on sale at ecost for $229

Anyways, I have a question though, the upgrade says you can change skins, and some already comes with the update, so how are those skins? Would anyone be kind enough to post some screenshots (lol, I am really impatient)....can you download more from any sites? Or make them yourself?

Thanks!

Welcome to ALC Tamim.

The Skins came with new firmware. They are nothing to really write home about, just gives additional color scheme to the screen and the background. As for customizing the screen, it may be possible but I don't recall seeing any documentation from sony regarding this possibility.

There is a "VAIO_Skin" folder which was created by the player so this may be the place where custom skins will go. I have not played around with it much so afraid can't be too helpful yet on this.

Take a look at this link to see a little more on what this added skin feature is like. Silicon Pop Culture link

Thank you very much auvi_joe!

I've seen the actual player review in Silicon Pop Culture before, but didnt know they also reviewed the update.

I saw the screenshot with the list of skins, and they look more like color schemes rather than actual skins. But oh well, something is better than nothing.

Thank you very much for the link,

Tamim

With 3.1, I found that you can't import each individual folder. Instead, it scans your harddrive for files and sorts it according to the album names and whatnot in the songs' ID3 tags. Your only other option is to import individual files, and then create the folder yourself. IMO, it's best that you go back to ver 2.3 for its easiness in importing the folders that you had sorted on the computer.

This is not exactly true. Just a correction - one can import an individual folder (containing tracks of the same album) with SonicStage even with version 3.1.

What I do is:

File --> Import --> Scan Folder --> Select "Settings" --> Select your desired folder within the "Import Files" window.

...What carrier do they use to send the case? ...

My case came today to NY via the US Postal Service. (Nice stamps!) I ordered from PDair.com about 8 days ago.

Hi everyone. I'm a new VP owner too! I have had it for one month. Like many of you I've had lots of software problems but I have managed to get by them. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

Does anyone know if Vio Pocket owners in the U.S. can take part in the Club Vaio forums? I registered with Sony at their U.S. site but the Sonystyle.Europe site doesn't let me register to join the forum.

Thanks for being here to help the newbies.

Does anyone know how to use "Ratings" on VP?

VP itself has a sort mode that has Stars (ratings), and also under "Initialize" menu, there's the Initialize Ratings menu. I have no clue how to set ratings on songs though.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

PS: I tried creating a folder in Japanese Firmware then convert it back to English one, and it did not recognize the folder anymore. However, in English firmware, if you transfer a media using "Photo storage" menu, the folder from the media is transfered over to VP separate from the USER_001 directory. That folder is also accessible through the VP's photo viewer. So I'm thinking there must be some sort of hidden flag somewhere. I'll investigate some more and get back to you guys.

no problemo...thank you for doing that, its much more organized that way :)

I have a few more question though, what exactly is the demo mode that the upgrade adds? Also, how does the lyrics view mode work? Is there any way you can have the lyrics show up in sync with the song?

My player should arive sometime this week, however, I have a feeling that it'll be late due to the plane crash in Pearson International Airport in Toronto yesterday. Thank god there were no fatalities, only minor injuries.

As far as I know, the demo mode does a slide show of jpg files stored under VAIO_demo folder after the player has been idling for a while. I haven't gotten the lyrics to actually work to begin with, so I can't really help you with that.

PS: So nobody knows anything about ratings of each song?

@ Tamim: Honestly, the lyric function is not a useful feature for me, so I did not test it. To answer your query: I believe you can view lyrics while the song in question in on play; just not within the same window. As for lyrics input, you will need to add the lyric texts via SonicStage.

@ iori: You can't manually assign music ratings for each music track - music ratings are assigned according to the playback frequency of each music track.

I use lyrics for some of my songs just b/c i think it's cool and i don't know certain songs. Yes you can view the lyrics while the song is playing but when you press play, all you have to do is scroll to the right menu (where the "play", "volume", etc. functions are) and you'll see the lyric function and just select it. Also, lyrics don't work with mp3's, they only works with ATRAC files so you're gonna have to convert. Hope that helps=)

Well, I received the PDAir case and I must say that this is a very high quality product and I am very satisfied with it. They ship it from Hong Kong and the case comes in a really, really nice case (not that it really matters because I'll probably throw it away, hehe) I actually liked the screw mechanism of the belt clip simply because it makes the case more versatile. I will mostly use it in my belt and it feels better than having the bulge in your pocket. Or you can simply unscrew it when you are going to throw it in your laptop/camera bag. I really recommend this case to protect your case. Use the PDair website to get it for $28, the gadgetino website lists it for about 5 dollars more.

In a side note I'll get the lot I won on ebay (a pair of Shure e2c's and 7 Ex-71's). I had been using the stock earbuds and I'm quite satisfied the more i play music through them (maybe they benefit from burn-in). But I'm ready to give it a try to the Shure monitors and the sony earphones. Is anybody interested in buying my other 6 EX-71's? hehe. Laters!

Yoshi
