jgore
Hey guys. While solving a problem with some mp3s that would sound broken for moments during playback, I figure out the way to get the best LP2 quality when it comes to transfer the songs. Being that with LP2 you are "compressing" an "already" compressed file, the mp3, I thought it would be a waste of quality. So why not to compress with LP2 a non-compressed file ?. Then I figured out I was right. So I extracted all my mp3s to WAV format and then I transfered them to my MZ-10. The result ??? NEAR CD QUALITY for your songs. So if you find your mp3s lack of brilliant sound like your're used to, do this and you'lll see the way quality changes along this process. Thank you and get me updated with your results. aeriyn
Um... that is what SonicStage does when it converts an MP3 to ATRAC3. It decodes the MP3 track to PCM .wav format and then encodes it in ATRAC3 ~132kbps (LP2). However... hmm... you might notice an increase in quality if you use a program other than SonicStage to do the decoding, since SonicStage's MP3 decoder is not the best in the world. I might see about this and find out if it makes a noticeable difference. I wonder... *runs off to try it*
jebleez
I see what you're getting at, but compressing to mp3 isn't like winzipping a data file. There's no way to "uncompress" an mp3. Upon conversion the file looses a lot of data to make it so small, and when you convert it back to wav, you're still dealing with a lossy file; though it now takes up a lot more space. Wav file sizes are based on length rather than the data contained, i.e. a five minute song would take up as much space as five minutes of silence.
