Hallo, I have not been here for a while, but am still into the minidisc, lovely music from them, music I find better than CD, even when music is recorded from a CD, it seems the MD throws out stuff not heard on the CD. Anyways, I am having a problem with some discs, TDK MD RXG 74 and MAXELL MD 74 GOLD, when I record to them, and play back, I get sound drop outs, bits were the music goes silent and sometimes a squeal as if the disc is momentarily moving too fast. Is this a problem known on recordable discs, or is it my recording unit. I am inclined to think it is the discs, because using new or newer TDK MD 74 and 80, I rarely have a problem, but what could go wrong with a recordable disc ? Oh, I should add, I am recording real time, not 2x or 4x My recording set up, is a SONY D-EJ955 cd player optically linked to a SONY MZ-R700 minidisc recorder and sometimes a laptop computer linked to the MD recorder via audio jack running between the MD recorder line in and the laptop headphone socket. The latter method not ideal, but it provides satisfactory reproduction for me. I have just got hold of a SONY CMT M100 MD hifi, which I have yet to work out the recording possibilities due to the lack of instruction manual. Anyone any ideas on any of it ?

My MZ-R700 has both, line in, and Mic, is there anything NET that is similar ? Line in I use more so than mic, but I do use mic for recording college lectures. And the latest requirement to wonder about, are the md units that have a built in radio tuner, did these variants occur with NET MD's. Basically it seems I seek the perfect machine, I understand, but one has to try.

When I first got my first MD unit, the MZ-R700, I was very pleased, but it had a few problems which at the time I accepted as it was old and pre owned. But as time went on these problems started to annoy so I sought answers. The problems were random skipping and blank spots in recording. Fair enough all the discs I had were high end pre owned discs, but I also had a couple of new sealed discs which were totally different in performance. This lead me to believe though the discs are fairly well protected, they do get dirty. So, I sourced a rotary minidisc cleaner, a device which uses fluid to wash the disc surface. This sorted out my problems as far as the disc was concerned. As to the MD unit itself, well a combined lens and head cleaner helped. Since, I have had no problems. So these old machines suffer problems, but largely the more common problems can be sorted out purely by investing in cleaning devices and giving them a good clean. Odd though I never thought the MD would require a head demagnetiser, if that is what it is, but then MD is a hybrid between optical and magnetic and the old tape recorders often benefited from occaisional head demagnetising. So whatever pre owned machine I get now, will get the ritual cleaning, and any pre-owned discs.

Greetings to you all, And so now I have my trusty MZ-R700, which I have been using for the past seven months with much pleasure, my situation has changed somewhat and now have a computer which may be used with a minidisc. Used in that perhaps I would like to move up a step and investigate the 'Net' MD. I still require a machine which can be used without a computer being present, that simplicity I refuse to lose, but would like for others if they may to suggest a likely MD unit which would fit my requirements. I like my MZ-R700, for it's features, but would also like the MZ-R900 for it's ability to receive song title info along with the music from my Sony D-EJ955 cd player, so was thinking to upgrade to the 900. But seeing as I now have a computer, is there an MD unit which is like the R900 which will also have NET capabilities ? I buy on Ebay, so there are the limitations of my search. *EDIT*, LCD remote is prefferable, although I know LCD remote works with MZ-R700, it might work with others so not supplied.

High Humidity ? well, it rains a lot, but then it is the sunny south west of England, Devon to be precise. Well the little buggers are not wandering around on the LCD now, but they were earlier when I was inputting data. Get a newer machine, yeah possibly, when the latest become ancient technology. Technology ludite here. I am a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. principle, just how good do you want to go when even LP4 sounds good enough for me, mind was copied by optic cable from high end sony cd D-EJ955, a sweet machine. Thanks anyway people, gassing the little mites in a plastic bag seems a good idea, not that it is cruel, they had their chance, I did ask nicely for them to leave, but it seems there was a breakdown in communication somewhere.

Hi, I have a MZ-R700, I know old, but suits my purpose,(I hate relying on pc's). So, for the first time I have tried inputting track information via the menu controls and noticed bugs in my MD player. Little white mites on the LCD screen. Now I am wondering at the presence of these bugs, I am experiencing various problems with my MD unit, like blank bits, skipping and even bits where there is the squawl of a short fast forward type noise on playback. I understand this latter noise is most probably the recording, i.e. it didn't record very well. Oh, I recorded on LP4, which I know is iffy sound quality, but it suits my purpose with my current music. The thought about these bugs, if they are in my MD unit, they could also be wandering around on important mechanism and electronics during record and playback. So, has anyone had this problem with wildlife in their MD unit ? Any suggestions on how to rid the little buggers ? Also, How could I clean my MD unit, the internals and discs, (it has never had a clean internally and the discs have never been cleaned )

Hello, to improve my MD experience, I aquired a Sony D-EJ 955 CD player, great machine, but the rechargeable batteries are shot. Now, the originals were Ni cads, 1.2v 600mAh, gumstick batteries. It would seem one cannot get ni cads anymore, in this type of battery, only Ni mh, which is fine, but the only ones I can find rate at a higher mAh, more than twice the Sony items. The question I have is could I use these higher capacity batteries in the CD player without causing damage, the voltage of 1.2v is the same, only the type of battery and the mAh are different. I only got the CD player, for transferring music to my MD via optical connection, but would like it to work as it should have done.Just me, if I have something, it has to work.

What maintanance can be done on MD

Thanks, I will try some of those, but one yhing eludes me, it says to clean both sides of the disc, if the disc is in a sealed hosing, how would I do that? -
Hi, I am new to minidiscs, and have just bought a pre owned Sony MZ R700. As far as I can see it is ok except for my first bit of copying, I recorded a CD which on playback had blank bits in it, when a blank bit occured, the disc indication in the LCD speeds up until the music is found again and the the indication slows down as it continues to play. Now the recording was done with an analog cable from a line out facility on a portable CD player, using an erased Maxell 74 gold minidisc. I have received the suggestion that it might be a fault with the recorder, the cable or the disc. So, I am looking at what maintenance I can do to the MZ R700, is there a maintenance guide available, what about MD cleaning discs ? I am shortly to receive a Sony DEJ 955 CD player, so I will try again using the Digital lead and see if there is a difference. If it is a fault with the recorder, has anyone heard of this fault and more importantly, does anyone know a fix for it? (p.s. I am ok with electro mechanical things from a repair point of view, so have zero qualms about surgery on the thing if needed)

Ok, so I am new to this MD recording, and I have hit a problem, which may not be a problem to everyone else but me, as I am a noob with MD. The problem is, I am copying a CD from an old portable using the portable's line out.So a digital source through an analog connection.I am using LP4, as it sounds fine to me, but I have patches in the recorded track, which are blank, when this happens, the little moving MD symbol speeds up.What is happening?Fault with me, the machine or my recording method,(CD is clean, but has a few light scratches)? I did wonder also, I am running the portable CD player on batteries only, not AC power, would this be a likely cause of the blank bits. Also, an observation, on LP1, the playback I can hear things in music like sampling and background interest where I have never heard them before, so obviously, I am getting a far superior playback of music than I have ever heard. If this is how good these things are, I will stay with MD.

A bit long in coming, but I got one, a MZ-R700, and a load of Maxell and high end TDK discs coming. At the moment I am charging the thing and putting my Technics XL-SP505 back together to use the line out facility to get my music on the machine. I am a bit impressed with Sony, and so am now watching a Sony cd player, a D-EJ825, purely because of the MD out facility, why not take advantage of a designed and compatible system. This all works, then I will be moving on my long owned and trusty Technics, I believe this machine was classed as a good one in it's time and there is still interest in them and mine still works, it only got taken apart for a thorough clean with isopropyl alcohol, oh and a hinge repair.

Ok,thankyou kind people for all your advice and information,I now know a bit more and so come to an idea of what I am searching for.So if I may,a further question based on what you have already given me. What I think I am searching for is a second generation machine, that is MDLP.I intend to record CD's for my own use so require a line in connection so that I may record direct from my 13 year old Technics portable CD player(SL-XP505).A line out would be useful for use in my car.I also need to be able to use an AA battery to power it as I travel quite a bit and mains charging may be difficult. As to remote,a backlit LCD type would be desireable and useful also I could find a use for a mic facility for my college studies. So basically I need a simple (and tough) unit that will copy CD's,record in LP as well as SP via line in,does not require mains charging, has a microphone facility, a line out for car use and a LCD remote. Whatever else a particular unit has will take second place to my main interests. Can someone suggest a likely machine? Something relatively simple will do for now,I do like the latest generation machines, but they will have to wait until I am a little more affluent. Thankyou. silverclaws

Hello,I am new to minidisc,so new that I have yet to get one and am slightly confused as to what would suit my needs. What I basically want,is a modern alternative to the old cassete player/recorders,small,versatile and able to record without using a computer, something that I can record music on from a hi fi or other source and there play when I want.Cash is tight being a student and by this the second hand market is where I will be looking. But what to look for,old md,mdlp or md hd?And a player or a recorder/player,will just a player record music from a source?See,I am confused as to what to get,the FAQ I read,am it caused me to come here, newbie.
