The reason why this is happening is that the old Lead acid batteries have contacts made of lead. Lead oxide forms and is essentially a DIODE, allowing charge to enter into the battery, but restricting the OUTPUT of the battery. This can occur on BOTH contacts of the battery, so that is why your fix works.....
