Taper Section's Achievements
About Me
I'm an OG tapehead, but I'm new here, so I figured that I'd introduce myself.
I cut my teeth in the early 80s in the taper section at Dead shows in the northeast U.S. I started taping shows on cassettes, but I moved to DAT when I heard the mind-blowing quality of a digital soundboard tape. I stealthily taped many other rock and jam band shows with my Sony PCM-M1 and a pair of cardioid mics sewn into a baseball cap.
My cousin taped dozens of Pearl Jam show with my digital rig. I always requested the taper section when mail ordering tickets for Dead shows and I participated in lots of tape trees where I mailed 6 copies of Dead show to the next person on the list. I was always in search of the best deals on blank tapes too, which wasn't easy before the Internet. Ah, good times!
I've been living in the Bay Area for over a decade and I'm currently enjoying a renaissance of audio cassettes and DATs. I jumped back down the rabbit hole after discovering a box of cassettes from high school in my garage. In addition to cassettes and DATs I found a cache of mini8, micro cassettes, Mini Discs, and Iomega ZIP disks.
