I tried saving a Timex Sinclair program I wrote to mindisc a couple months back, but I think my Timex Sinclair must be broken because the recording had so much power line noise in it that the computer couldn't read it back in successfully. I was using high quality shielded cables to make the connections, so that's not the problem.

Sony has MD drives in some of their VAIOs, but they don't sell the drives separately, so if you want one, I think you'll have to buy a VAIO.

Yes, you can play back MDs recorded on newer machines on the MZ-1. They must not be MDLP tracks of course, as the MZ-1 doesn't support MDLP. You will have some sound quality loss (I have no idea how much really), because the ATRAC decoder chip in the MZ-1 is inferior to the ATRAC decoder chips in newer machines.

Yeah, sorry I didn't realize you were in Greece.

Have you tried Radio Shack? That'd certainly be the first place I'd go to find a plug.

Optical uses S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format), and AFAIK (about 98% sure), it's just PCM with some extra stuff (like SCMS information).

I wouldn't be so sure that the MZ-N10 won't let you adjust record levels while recording. I once got into an argument with someone who claimed the MZ-N707 wouldn't let you do on-the-fly level adjustment. He had an MZ-N707 and said he was sure of himself. Unfortunately for him, I also have a '707 and I'm 110% sure that it will let you adjust record levels on the fly, as I use that feature all the time.

Dropped my SHARP MD-MT161 (aka MT15) from a great height...

Yes, end search is still there, but you can set an option in the menu so that the recorder will always record from the end of the disc, even if you don't press end search first. As far as I know the digital REC level can be set to manual automatic, and the analog level definitely works that way. Don't really know the answer to this. On-the-fly level control DEFINITELY IS available on the MZ-N707. If somebody tells you otherwise, they don't know what they're talking about. -

Where did you get your information about the MZ-N710? -
N707 charger, how smart is it?
LostChordSearcher replied to triplea's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
The stop button doubles as the "charge" button. If you look closely, you'll see that it's labled stop/CHG. It only works when you've got the unit hooked directly to the AC adapter, and not when it's in the cradle. -
I just wanted to let you know that if you're in the US, the MZ-N707 DOES NOT come with a backlit remote. It comes with a non-LCD stick remote.

NEW Sony NetMD units beyond N10 !!!
LostChordSearcher replied to MDpower's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
So what does everybody think MZ-NExxx means? Recorders that only have NetMD capability (no line/optical in), maybe? I'm hoping NF means it supports high speed upload! -
md attrac compression limitations??
LostChordSearcher replied to a topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Unless, you're recording in mono mode, you should definitely still be able to hear the stereo effects recorded in your music. If you use LP4, you may hear some problems, but SP and LP2 should work fine. -
Unless you already have an MD recorder, a MD player is going to be a bad choice for you. You have to have a recorder to put ANYTHING on minidiscs. Players simply play back discs, so unless you plan on only buying prerecorded MDs, they're not useful unless you also have a recorder.

Those cases are not the same as the ones prerecorded minidiscs come in. The cases pre-recorded MDs come in are roughly the size of a cassete case (a little bigger), and about the same shape.

HELP!! Can anyone help me retrieve deleted data??
LostChordSearcher replied to div793's topic in The Loft
Most Sony decks can be used to do TOC cloning. It's not an announced, or even necessarily intended feature, but it can be done pretty easily. Instructions are here: http://www.minidisc.org/cloning_procedure.html Although the procedure here is for a specific Sony deck, it's the same for all of them AFAIK. -

LostChordSearcher replied to div793's topic in The Loft
I'm willing to help you out, as I have the equipment and know how to do TOC cloning. I'm in the US. You can reach me by email at ac7cfN0SPAM@yahoo.com (remove NOSPAM of course). -
Wild MZ-N707 Hack
LostChordSearcher replied to darK (aka Tharaka)'s topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I just did it on my MZ-N707. The Mic Sensitivity setting doesn't actually do anything. You can change it between high and low, but the actual sensitivity doesn't change. The M-Timer and Personal Disc Memory features seem to work just fine. Haven't tried the line-out yet. Edit: Just tried line-out, and it seems to work fine! That is, when you switch to line-out mode, the volume on the output goes to maximum, and the volume buttons no longer have an effect. I don't know if it's lower noise than the headphone output (bypasses the headphone amp), but I'll check on that tomorrow and post results.
