1. I have a situation similar to the ones previously described and hope someone can give me some guidance: I made a MASTER LIVE CONCERT recording using the PCM mode and did the editing on my MZ-RH1 before attempting to transfer the files to my Macintosh G4. Part of the data seems to be "missing" as I cannot locate it. The missing data was in a second group before I removed all of the "Mark" entries in an attempt to make one large file to download instead of about 20 small ones. For some reason (maybe I bumped the remote) the recorder stopped during the concert. I discovered this during an applause and started it up again quickly. The part that was subsequently recorded was in Group 2. I listened to the recording and heard the second part worked fine. After the editing of TOC markers discussed above I can no longer find this part of the program on the Master MD. Is there a way to UNDO the saved TOC changes somehow so I can go back to find the music that was there and now appears to be un-accessable? I hope that somehow cloning the TOC using a different HiMD might work. Has anyone tried this? Suggestions?? Thanks for your ideas!!!! I would really like to get this part of the concert back if possible....
2. Portable Units I own: 2- MZNH1's, 2- MZN1's, MZN707, MZR700, MZR70. Decks: MXDD40, MDSJE430. I am going to buy a car MD deck this month. Uses/listening: I listen every day as I coomute 30 minutes to work. I love books on tape, transferred to MD at the LP4 rate, giving me LOTS of time on each MD. I can usually get a complete audio book on 2 MDs. Uses/recording: I am an audio professional and have been doing digital recordings since 1992. I presently use MD to backup my DAT recordings (using both ATRAC and PCM), and lately have MASTERED with MD (PCM). My only issue is that I prefer the Macintosh and boought my two NH1's without hope of being able to download to my Mac. Now that this is available I will likely buy one of the new units that download to the Mac as well. I would be very grateful if someone were to provide a way to download original recordings from the NH1's to the Macintosh! Uses/data: My HiMD units assist me carrying data to and from work, and backup up important information. WONDERFUL!! Alternatives: I have an iPod that was given to me to repair. (What can I say, I am a Mac user!) It does what it does well, but requires iTunes to put playable music on it. This is fine, but I need to RECORD too. Battery life is also an issue with the iPod. I use it as a hard disc too, but my HiMD unit does more because it will do EVERYTHING I need the portable unit for. I also bought one of the original CREATIVE JukeBoxes with a 6 gig HD. What a waste for a portable unit, battery life is terrible. It records, but there is no metering on the unit, A to D converters could be better. Finding tunes on it and assembling playlists is very awkward at best. The interface is USB1, so it is very slow. It has been in a box for months. My MDs always sound GREAT and I can monitor levels in rehearsal before the recording and set them correctly. (I look forward to using one of the newer units that allow changes of input volume without stopping the recorder.) Requests: I would purchase a HiMD deck if one became available. Please do not abandon the higher-end users, as we would be willing to part with more of our hard-earned monies for 3rd generation units that would fill-in the gap left by the absence of DAT.
3. I am disapponted to hear that only the new M models will upload to the Macintosh. I had hoped that there might be a way for someone to hack the software and allow it to work on earlier HiMD units that would previously only work on the PC. It sounds like it is unlikely that this will ever be possible. Thank you for your explanation. I guess I need to save up for yet another HiMD purchase. I hope they don't become extinct too soon, and that SONY will continue to manufacture the HiMD media since nobody else appears to do this.
4.
This is disappointing at best because DAT is going out (tape manufacturers are saying they will probably no longer make DAT -- or other -- tape, including 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2- inch analogue tape), now it sounds like MD may also be on the way out. The issue is not just the ability to do digital recordins, but PORTABLE digital recordings. DAT was so small that a portable DAT was almost as small as many of the portable MD units on the market in the early nineties. Being able to use such a small form factor instead of a CD Deck-sized unit is a DEFINITE plus in many cases! Also, MD recording has always generally been much more reliable that recording to a CD, at least for me. I have NEVER had a failue recording to MD, but have had several "bad" CDs after a recording. This is why I use more than one unit to master with, especially if the recording is critical. MD IS FAR MORE FORGIVING and less likely to be scratched or otherwise damaged from handling. (How does MD media hold up in a hot car?)

As it is, I have two Hi-MD recorders that will not export to the Macintosh because I didn't want to wait, thinking they would NEVER write an app for us Mac users. Now there is one, but it was only intended to work with two specific new HiMD units. This is so unfair! Has anyone heard of a hack that allows downloading of personally-recorded music from an MZ-NH1 or other earlier model to a Macintosh instead of the PC using the software for the NEW HiMD units?? I hope someone will come up with one very soon and let us all know about it.

5. I have TWO MZ-NH1 units and LOVE them. However I would like to be able to reformat my MDs that were previously used in the MD mode as HiMDs instead. The directions tell me to go into the EDIT mode and then select "Format", but with these non-write protected MDs loaded in the unit, the EDIT mode does not appear when I choose to go into the Menu. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for being here!
6. I downloaded BOTH tools (the one from SONY and the one from our friend in GB) and have not been successful getting either to work. Should I download my files to the PC using the download software supplied with my MZ-NH1 or should I use the software to find the files ON THE MD UNIT FIRST?? I open the SONY software and no files appear in the list even though I have downloaded the file and it can be played from the PC. Is there a "trick" or specific method I need to follow to get either of these to work? Suggestions are much appreciated. I purchased this unit to eventually replace my well-used Denon DAT. Thanks for being there all of you.
7. You were correct, there is no shortcut here. The only MD recorders that have digital outputs are the decks, not the portables. Even they have no high speed output, so the copy is realtime. That will take a lot of time. It would be cheaper to buy 20 MDs or so (I have purchased packages of ten 80-Min MDs for under $16.00 at BestBuy) and do your recording while there. Worry about transfer to CD later so you can get some sleep and enjoy the concert while you are there. I recommend the MZ-N707 from Sony. I also own an MZ-R700 and an MZ-R70. Bring extra batteries. The mics I use are excellent (Radio Shack omni-directional Stereo pair--$29.99) but they are hard to find now due to having been discontinued. The above units do not do well if the sound is very loud because none of these recorders have a sensitivity switch for the mic input. If you can find one that does (normal, -15db) you will get better recordings if the environment is going to be very loud because the mic pres can be set to a lower sensitivity. I do quite a bit of classical recording and my setup is excellent for this. Good luck!
