    Ipod Bashing

Eh. You don't come across as the most objective poster either. Why is everyone so defensive and uptight about portable electronics? And I find it interesting that you view the most important aspect of this forum to learn about MD's weaknesses. I don't disagree that it's important to be able to learn the pro's and con's, and maybe you're just irritated at the ignorance a lot of people display, but that's the world for you. I don't find learning about MD's drawbacks to be the most important part of this site-- it's just about information and news to me, the pros are as important as the cons. I wouldn't even say you need to need recording capabilities to find MD suitable for your needs-- for some people removable media + gapless are still selling points, just as an example. Of course that's just my opinion-- and it's ok to disagree. If I had to bet, most people are not as picky as either of us and could be happy either way. I agree that lately iPod bashing threads are just that. But sometimes a Hi-MD vs. iPod thread is legitimate and people just want to know the pros and cons of both formats, everyone's perspective is different. It's not black and white to me when I consider what to recommend someone as far as a DAP goes. I'll agree with you to the extent that there needs to be no bashing of any kind. Not iPod, not MD, etc. Sometimes it's fun, taken in the right context, but otherwise it's just immature and not helpful. I use a lot of different formats, some more than others-- I like objective comments from users, not biased comments. But alas-- there will always be fanboys and zealots, and this happens to be a MiniDisc focused board, and hence MD fanboys are likely to find their way here...
  2. I'm guessing a DH10p would be a downloader or something, not unlike the NH3D is to the current generation of Hi-MD. So I'm curious-- what's this big revelation that you all were hoping for? Larger capacity discs? Are there any drawbacks to this new lineup over the previous generation? I think direct mp3 playback is what most old school MD users have been holding out for... they should finally be happy and interested in MD again, perhaps. Let's be honest-- even if Sony did come up with 2GB discs or something like that, when do you think we'd even see them in stores? It took so long for 1GB discs to become available... Here's my take: if these things played back AAC natively they could really dip into the iTunes / iPod crowd a bit. We'll never be 100% satisfied will we? Of course if we were... it'd get boring
  3. I think it was an MZ-R50 I was stoked to see MD being pimped in the movie too.
  4. That's interesting to know since I have 3 DAPs that use hard drives. Though the iPod being the most popular, it will also be the one that gets called on such issues, even if it's not the only one with the problem [broken record] Still waiting for an Auvi Hi-MD to bring me back to the format [/broken record]
  5. The main issue I see is battery life... but if you're just listening here and there and can charge it frequently then maybe that won't be as big of deal... still, I couldn't rely on my phone for music...
  6. Of course you wouldn't use your cell phone as a dedicated mp3 player, but.... the question still nags at me, how does mp3 playback sound? Hehe... my Pocket PC sounds pretty decent were it not for the occassional background noise. Same problem there though-- battery life. I was actually very tempted by the Treo 650-- it's relatively small for a pda-phone. If I didn't already have a PPC I might have gone for it.
  7. I seem to be one of the few on SprintPCS. Signed on back in 2000 with them (only one i trusted back then)... current phone is a Sanyo MM7400, which I like. I was going to hold out for a phone with miniSD slot and better camera, but then i realized--- I really could care less about those things, I barely use my phone as it is! But as far as phones go it's the best I've ever had-- great reception can call quality (what phones are for, right?) Only thing it could use is bluetooth for a headset, but like i said-- i barely use it, it'd just be a frill. It's terrible to be a gadget freak...
  8. Why else would I get an iPod for the gym? Kidding, of course. But the iPod Shuffle has had me considering a flash player for the gym for the first time. At my gym CD players still seem to rule (because they're cheap and that's what the average pooch knows). I do see the occassional iPod being flashed around-- I'd use the Mini at the gym if it had good enough bass with the electronica i listen to there). My sister got an iPod Mini from her hubby for Christmas... but she still prefers her MD at the gym for the express reason that people don't know what it is. She feels like she's much more worried about losing the mini than her MD.
  9. I find it hard to take sides because I see good and bad in everything. Hence I own an iPod Mini, Hi-MD, Vaio Pocket, and who knows-- I might get a shuffle exclusively for gym use. I'm such a slave to portable electronics...
  10. If a tsunami hits I can die a happy man, hah. I'll keep an eye out for those bobble hula dealies And Nis-- I wish I was going this or next month-- my least favorite time of year.
  11. I looked back. Not that I turned back, but I did give the Auvi a listen again and dang... I like it so much better than my NH1. While we're doing hello's... Hello Vaio Pocket VGF-AP1L.

    Shure E4c

If you get a pair let me know how they sound I use the E3c, like you, with an iPod Mini... though I'm not amping them. It's the lower-end that I find lacking on some music with the E3c+iPod Mini combo. And no I'm not a basshead Just certain types of music seem to be lacking...
  13. I simply suggest HaloScan for the comments. What you do is modify your blogs template to use a different commenting system-- not very difficult, really, and I'm sure HaloScan will walk you through it. Blogger has commenting but IIRC you have to be a registered user on blogger to post comments through blogger's commenting system. Otherwise I think blogger is great
  14. I just booked a flight to Hawaii for May. I've always wanted to go somewhere tropical... Hawaii is pretty touristy but not where I'll be staying up on the North Shore (Turtle Bay). May seems so far away....
  15. Exactly. While we may do some editing in Vegas, I thought it was interesting that the audio features were the real strength of the software. But as far as having a degree in multimedia communications, I'm sure it would make sense for them to teach Final Cut Pro. It's also too bad that current Macs can't run that Protools software that you mentioned. What happened?
  16. Might I recommend something such as HaloScan for comments? This way people don't have to register with blogger to comment on the blog (unless commenting is not an important feature of your blog...) http://www.haloscan.com/
  17. Interesting. I've just started a multimedia class (the most basic the school has) and they indicated that we'd be using Vegas 5-- not so much for video but for audio, since it does what it does so well. I imagine they'll be using Final Cut Pro for actual video editing applications.
  18. That's what I was gonna say Though I understood what Damage was getting at, hehe... I still remember using tapes! I tend to think of this more in terms of removable media vs. files on a computer/other player. I have a coworker who believes media is dead, only uses mp3s and dvd rips (has a modded xbox that he uses as a media center) Not legal, as he rips his CDs and then sells them (forget about illegal-- it's blasphemous to anyone who cares about audio fidelity, heh).

    Shuttle Xpc

I'd go for the one with the nForce2 MCP then if you want to do XPC, rather than the one with Via for sound (though I agree with you on waiting till uni). While I have an nForce3 XPC and find the onboard audio to be worlds better than the onboard crap on an old via chipset (about 3 1/2 hears old- so much electronic noise), if the SN45 has the nForce2 MCP then it's a legit sound card and not that cheap stuff. I know a lot of XPC fans have been complaining that subsequent nForce XPCs haven't had very good sound in comparison.... so if sound is a legitimate concern this is probably about as good as SFF gets (at least on-board). There's no such thing as future-proof anymore (if there ever wasy) I have the SN95G5 (waited for it to build an XPC so I could be "futureproof" by having socket 939) - all this means is that I might be able to drop a dual-core A64 in somewhere down the line (if heat isn't a problem...)-- otherwise it uses old PCI and AGP standards, when everything coming out now is PCI-Express (though I'm sure AGP will be around for quite some time).

    Shuttle Xpc

Oh, and if you want more XPC specific help, I found this forum helpful-- it's basically an XPC / SFF forum. There are other hardware forums on the site, but the XPC one is one of the main ones. http://forums.sudhian.com/default.aspx?FTV...20Form%20Factor

    Shuttle Xpc

The SN45G or whatever it is-- it's a good machine. But what advantages does it have for you over the SN41G? My brother has one of them (whichever of the 2 doesn't come with built in video), and I don't recall what was better about it other than that it had more flexibility for the "power user". Do both of these models have SPDIF in/out, or does only one? Do they have nForce2 audio (with dolby digital decoding and stuff)? If so, get the cheaper one-- it sounds like you just want to slap in your current hardware but just have it smaller / quieter. (Then again, I'm too lazy to figure out exactly how much difference 100 NZD is...) I'm tempted to do the same myself with my Athlon 2100+ machine. As for selling the iPod, etc-- I can't help you there. If it's necessary to get the XPC and having your PC small/quiet like that is more valuable to you than the iPod, then go for it. You can talk yourself into and out of pretty much anything, I've found. Unfortunately for me I usually talk myself into spending money
  22. Yeah. I mean maybe OS 9... Imagine how painful it is to use a dual 1.8ghz G5 with 256mb of RAM. Painful I tell you! The sad thing is a lot of people will get iMacs / Mac Minis with 256mb of RAM and probably have no idea what a bottleneck it is on their computer.
  23. I'm more excited about Shuttle's Media Center PC Certainly Apple has some great software going for it. However, I've used a Mac with OS X and 256MB of RAM. It is not an understatement that you will be doing one thing at a time. OS X NEEDS more RAM than that.
  24. Sounds like poor management to me, which is unfortunate but seems to plague a lot of businesses (even good ones). Where I work if such a full time position opened up they'd likely post a job opening and let current employees have a chance at it. Good luck with the meeting with your boss, man.
  25. I have a lot of mp3s but I guess I haven't really tried them on my D-NE300 (I'm thinking of upgrading to the 900). Like others have said, it works great with Atrac though I mainly use it with Redbook audio CDs-- which is where I think it shines.
