    No more mini disc?

Is this stuff all backward compatible? In other words, will I stil be able to buy the good old fashioned 74 min md that are about 2 bucks? And the home stereo units as well?

    No more mini disc?

Geez when I see hi-md, I still think md. What is that a whole nother world or something?
  3. People are always predicting the demise of mini disc. I thought actually it might abate a bit after Sony just made Connect site with mini disc as it's featured product to download, buy just yesterday, a tech support guy with major electronics firm (non sony), said that he's hearing on the grapevine that Sony is not supplying part for their players and will end making mini disc. anyone hear anything?
  4. Wow, that sucks KJ. I wonder if there is a real time web list that has what is copy protected. I get most my cd in trades, I trade a lot, so I wont know otherwise. thanks for tips.
  5. Kevin: Thanks so much, very helpful, -- I'm going to explore all those ideas. couple questions. 1) How do they get away with this crap? Think about it, I'm trying to burn a cdr from my minidisc, and I'm using "music" cdrs which cost more and which money goes to all record lables. 2) Actually my first 500 md were all analog. I notice no sound improvement with digital, but decided to go digital only for very handy fact that with digital, you don't have to worry about song order-- it takes care of that. I find digital also imperative going from md to cdr (I only use it as back up) for same reason. Another idea, is I could also download all my mixes into computer-- it's tedious though. 3) you sure all of them? I remember Phillips making a dual burner, but don't see it on their website anymore. 4) side note, but at same time discovered this, did notice some new cds wont burn on my computer. When did this start becoming prevelant and is there any place that list all cd that have copy protection?
  6. I have a Sony dual deck burner. I am having problem backing up my md's to the burner because Sony says it uses "seriel copy management", which prevents music that was copied to the md digitally, to be then backed up to a music cdr digitally. Are there any specific cd burners people know of (past or present -- home units only with digital input) that don't have this infuriating feature? thanks
  7. Yes, you are probably right, just a guess. Love to find someone who really knows. Love to have my home unit remember song it was last on. But you know I just got ipod, and it seems to shut down after two days of non use, even with battery full
  8. No, not for me, I listen to my home unit way more than my portable. I'm acutally wondering if someone knows the technology behind how this happens -- maybe it has to do with portables having a battery.
  9. I'm really curious as to why md players that are portable, or even car units remember what song you left off on, but home units do not. Any explanation appreciated. thanks!
  10. What about the forums quetions. Know good forums for these cd questions? mp3 forums? thanks!
  11. Thanks Majestic: the browser is good. Are those item past and present, or all they all still being made? Anyway the autralia site good to. Shows you that MD is alive and well more abroad than here, and that here Sony is not showing all it's cards. I'm telling you if you wanted a new home unit with digital out and went to USA Sony Style site, you would not see one and would be told that is all that can be discussed.
  12. Majestic: Let me clarify. If I were to put a commercially recorded cd into my computer with i tunes (I'm on a Mac)... then i tunes would query online Database and pull up artist/song titles etc -- but this is based on that database matching things it sees on the cd like length, number of songs etc. The CD has nothing encoded on it about song info -- were you aware of that? I just learned that last week. Maybe you know less than I do. Hence, when I put the cd into my cd player (not the computer), and then record song to my home unit MD player, no song info, artist info transfers , nothing. I was hoping otherwise, (now that I got a new cd player with a digital output). But I'm putting out this post to double check. Let me know what you think. Also, want to ask: are there any great forums geared to CD recording, mp3 transferring, or general audio stuff, or Sony products ... thanks!
  13. Majestic: I typed in your model and found it selling on a website in UK. In fact, this British retailer had like 15 home units. But where is the website that then lists all the current models that Sony is currently making? Again, when I go to Sonystyle.com I only see three models, and Sony will not discuss anything else. thanks!
  14. I have a home unit MDS-JB940. Was thinking of getting another one, but don't see it on Sony website Sony style. But if you do a search, you find two companies selling them new. I just wrote one, and they say Sony still manufactures it. (the only unit with a digital output) But when I e mail Sony if they manufacture this, they say they can only discuss products listed on their site. Any ideas on this appreciated. thanks!
  15. Can you be more specific? I had long talk with two sendior techs at Apple recently, and they explained that when I insert a cd into my computer and then see artist/title info, it's becasue it queried it from online database, based on match of songs, lenght of cd and other matches, and that cds have absoslutely no song/album, or artist info embedded into them whatsoever. Do you know otherwise? Please be specific. thanks!
  16. JUst got the Sony cd player with optical out. And it does not transfer any cd text info to mini disc. This conforms to what I have been learning recently that commercial cd's do not, in fact, have any data imbedded into them.
  17. I've been recording with analog rca cords on home unit MD, for awhile. I think the default for recording is +0.5 is that correct? Sounds good to me. I don't understand it too much. I'm going to finally getting cd player with optical out (to the MD). Do I still set the recording level, or is that now done automatically/ or dynamically? thanks!
  18. When I got my home unit md 5 years ago, my cd player did not have optical out. I may buy new one shortly. 1) With recording optically, will all info, songs , artist, album show up then on all mds? 2) Will that info tranfer over if you make a backup copy cdr of the md? 3) If so, then what is keyboard for? tweaking mistakes? thanks!
  19. I have a MDS-JB940. It's a home unit with an optical out. I think I got it a couple of years ago for about , I can't remember now, I think $300 to $350, anyone know? I went on Sony's site and now the cheapest unit with digital out is $700! I just went on e bay and a guy just sold my unit for $270. What I want to ask is, what other models, home units other than mine, also were made with digital out? And what the problem with Sony anyway? You can get a cd player with digital out for $130. Also, while I'm here I'd love to ask: does anyone make a dedicated mp3 home unit player? I've searched sony etc and I don't think it exist. I find my i pod sounds great as portable but horrific on home stereo. And does anyone make a cd jukebox where the trays would be removable? I've looked for that too and dont think it exist either. Lastly, any recommendations appreciated for a website with great rates on cd labels. thanks!!!!!
