I have owned both a Sharp 702 and 722 model MD recorders and have been generally pleased with their performance (with the exception of the 722 recording capability not working now after a dreaded TOC error).
A major feature which I regularly use with both models is the monaural recording of speech with playback at 2x speed. This enables me to compress and reduce the listening time by 1/2 with very little distortion of the tone.
I am curious if anyone is aware of a newer, reliable replacement MD recorder that has these features. I know that some of the subsequent Sharp models still had them, but what about any other manufacturers or particular models? I know that a Sony 505 model, and probably many others, that will record in mono, but will not playback at 2x speed.
