Thanks Jazmaan, for your reply! I assumed that would be the answer I would get, but was hoping someone might know something more definate then what I've read in other threads. I think I'll keep my MZ-NH1 on pre-order, in hopes it will work well for what I need.

Hello, This subject has been touched on in a few threads but being a newbie in the digital world I’m still unclear on what the options are to edit a live recording. My past computer editing/EQ’ing experience is from analog cassette tape to line in on computer and record a .WAV file, then use the .WAV file in Creative Audio’s “Wave Studio” program to edit, EQ and create separate song .WAV files for burning to CD. From what I’ve read, I need to get the HI-MD recording into a .WAV format (or possibly some other format but I’m used to .WAV) for editing and I have two options of doing this. Let’s assume I have the MZ-NH1 model and record a live band, via PCM mode. I can take that “live” recording and download that to my PC (Questions... is a PCM recording download speed any faster then real time or does PCM recording benefit from the fast USB download times they talk about? To take that question a step further... Do the recordings have to be in a compressed format to download at the increased speeds they claim? Does a lower compression recording (48kbs) transfer at a faster speed then a higher compression recording (say 256kbs)?) Now I have my recording in Sonic Stage, PCM format. (What are my options for editing the recording, assuming I want to crop the recording to separate songs and EQ them etc. ?) From what I’ve read, I cannot use Sonic Stage to write the file to a .Wav format for editing, unless I burn from Sonic Stage to a CD then I can rip from the CD to a .Wav format… am I understanding this correctly? If so, can someone explain the “rip from CD” process and what is involved and/or what tools can be used for this? The other option, to get the PCM recording to .WAV format, is to run a line out of the HI-MD recorder into my soundcard and simply record the signal into a .WAV format… correct? I guess there could be some sound quality loss this way. Are there other ways to get a recording from the HI-MD unit to a .WAV file? Other/Better ways to edit this type of HI-MD PCM recording? Thanks in advance for any replies or links to threads that clearly explain this.

I'm new to MD (waiting for my MZ-NH1 to arrive), but I was curious how you utilize MD technology in your car. Do you simply use headphones with your walkman? Do you somehow run it into your car stereo (if so, how are you accomplishing this)? Do you have a line in on your stereo? Do you use some kind of FM modulator (that is what I have for my CD player)? Other ways of listening in your car? I have a basic cassette player in my vehicle with no line in. What options would you recommend in this scenario? The FM modulator is not very good quality and hard to deal with, but the cassette things you can buy for a line in doesn't work with my stereo, it kicks out the cassette. I guess I need to wire a line in for direct hookup of my MD unit. Sort of a silly question but we need something to discuss while we patiently wait for the release!

I have the MZ-NH1 on pre-order. This will be my first digital recording unit of any type so I'm excited to be moving away from the analog world (finally!). I plan to mainly use it to record live music via the mic in, although running some of my favorite albums onto one disc and taking that with me on trips and such will be awesome also. Of course, being able to use it as an external drive (like a zip drive) could come in handy as well. Lots of uses with one of these HI-MD units, I can't wait!

From what I'm reading, the MZ-NH1 (unlike the 900) does not have a way to use AA batteries? It would be nice if it did... I guess I'll have to order another lithon battery for a backup.

Kurisu, thanks for your response. Being the forum moderator I value your opinion! If Sonic Stage II has CD burning capabilities then I'm assuming I can edit/burn my live recordings to CD. You've put my mind at ease, thanks! It sure sounds as though there is some confusion on the subject, based on some of the posts.

WOW... this is news to me!! I have the MZ-NH1 on pre-order, just so I can record via "Mic in" live music then run into my computer, edit and burn to CD. If you can't burn to CD or copy to any other format... what are your options for listening back? Can you only play it back via your computer or a line out of your HI-MD player? Please set me straight on this??

Thanks for the replies! I mainly record my band for making demo's and being able to burn CD's for others in the group for listening back. I don't really have a Home Studio... just a decent computer with audio editing software etc. I'm also wondering if anyone has used "Core Sound" Low Cost Binaural mic's for recording live music? I have a pair of those and I'm just waiting for my HI-MD unit to give them a try. A buddy of mine has a pair of these mics with a minidisc and he recorded a Jeff Beck concert that came out pretty darn good. I tried plugging these mics into my mic jack on my computer but they didn't seem to do that well. Hopefully that little test doesn't represent the mic's recording capability. Does anyone have a favorite mic that they use for live "bar band" type of recording?

Hello all! Being a musician for 20+ years, I've always just recorded off the board to cassette but it is time I move into the digital world. At the beginning of April I decided to delve into the MD world and was excited to find that I may be coming to MD at a good time with HI-MD coming out. I've been reading these boards and learning what I can. But I have a question that I'm sure has probably been discussed to death, but to beat a dead horse... could anyone give me a comparison of recording in PCM compared with say the best quality compression (which I believe would be the Atrac 3 256k, correct me if I'm wrong). It would be nice to stick a 1 gig disc into the player, set it to 256k compression and record the entire night without having to switch tapes. Although 1.5 hours of PCM recording time will be plenty to switch between sets but I'm wondering if the quality is that noticable between PCM and 256k. I'm guessing it has to do with how discerning your ear is and I imagine I'll have to try it myself and make my own opinoins but I'm curious of other opions on the subject. If there is a thread I can read concerning this, please point me in the right direction. By the way... I've preordered the MZ-NH1 Thanks!
