Sony's designs are pretty hit-and-miss when it comes to ergonomics and ease of use. Point in case: the rocker bar on the N1. Ugh. Try to put THAT unit in record-pause mode. Makes my little fingers hurt just thinking about it. :laugh:
I think Japanese manufacturers, but Sony in particular, are so obsessed with making things very small that they forget about things such as ergonomics and sound quality. Point in case: N10. While the control scheme was easy to use and a great improvement on the N1 and successive units... it sounds like mud. :sleep:
Sony = the Japanese word for shortsightedness. :grin:

I used the Service Mode hack on my N505 to erase the discs. :grin: Almost forgot about that!
Anyhow, they are freshly recorded to SP mode and I'm happy about that...
*runs off to hunt down track name lists for the CDs she recorded*
My PC is in a storage room along with most of my stuff because I lost my apartment (roommate lost his job and jumped the lease) and I'm staying with my grandmother. She doesn't like computers. :whatever:

Hey there.
I am wondering if there's any way to erase MDs that were previously recorded in SonicStage, using the functions on the MD unit itself. I don't have access to my PC right now, and I have 10 discs I'd like to record other things onto.
Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Ohhhh. *dumb* I get it now. The 5-way control pad on the MD unit itself.
Well, wanna hear the real reason there's no pause function on it?
Because of the unit's ability to record. To put it into record-pause mode, the pause and play buttons must be separate.
At least, that's how I believe it to be. On all MD downloaders and players I've seen, the play/pause button were one and the same, but always separate on recording units.

I'm more of a hobo living in the shoes of a hobo.
I don't have any thousand-dollar audio systems and my PC is rather mid-to-low-end.
And as of now, I don't have a house either. >.< Staying with my dad for the time being, while I look for a roommate, which is what I *should* be doing here at the library. :sleep:

If you record them in MP3, no. If in PCM, I do not know.

The 1GB discs are not compatible with the old legacy MD recorder/player units. The disc technology is significantly different.

Marcnet found this out around a month ago. He's already coded a program that uses DirectShow filters to do this very same thing outside of GraphEdit.

When making analog real-time recordings, the MD recorder doesn't know where to put in track marks like it does with digital real-time recordings, since there's no way for an analog signal to tell the unit to do that.
You either have to put your track marks in manually (slow) or have whatever media player you are using to space the tracks apart by 3 seconds of silence, which will cause the MD recorder to automatically make a track mark.

Yes. It uses a standard 3.5mm stereo miniplug. The headphone out of the NF610 can be used as a pseudo-line out if you set all DSP effects (mega bass and EQ) to flat or 0 and turn the volume up to 30/30. It's somewhat close to a line output.
What setting of recording on the MD unit (SP or LP or the like) is appropriate to recording of vinyl records?SP mode is the best quality. It has the best sound and compresses the least amount out of all the ATRAC codecs (292kbps bandwidth). However, it has the shortest per-disc record time at only 74-80 minutes depending on the disc used.
LP2 mode might be sufficient for recording from vinyl if your equipment wasn't the best in the world, and your mileage may vary. Personally, anything I've recorded from vinyl I've always found that SP works best even with any old setup. ATRAC3 is just not as good. (132kbps bandwidth.)

Yanno, if you did your research before making a purchase, you could've avoided all this frustration, especially on a product so expensive.
Legacy MD does not upload at all. It was made in an era before PC Audio was in wide use, and it was only adapted for partial use with them recently. The USB transfer capabilites of NetMD are almost useless for anything but casual listening. (Sound quality's not so good either.)
Hi-MD does upload, but it's so hampered by current DRM restrictions that it's nearly useless without Marcnet's HiMDRender application, or the USB streaming audio method.
The Optical/Line-In and Mic In... are just that. Inputs. They are not outputs. Hi-MD works in the same way.
MD is an old-school technology that Sony clings to with the tenacity similar to Capcom's milking of the Megaman franchise. The idea is a good one; the implementation is not. If Sony completely had redesigned their product with Hi-MD, bringing real innovation, such as DRM-free analog recordings and native MP3/AAC/Lossless Audio recording and playback support... drag and drop transferring of tracks (even through a management software, doesn't have to be USB mass storage method that most CF recorders use) Hi-MD could become a serious competitor against not only other recording formats, but against other playback formats as well (e.g. iPod).

I have a question, though. Can other MD units play discs I've written from my computer? I'm guessing the answer is NO, becuase otherwise we could copy stuff, and Sony doesn't want that.
Yes.
Any MD recorded on one MD recorder (or in SonicStage to an MD recorder) can be played on any other MD recorder or player. Same goes for Hi-MD.

why not use a xitel?
Xitels have an optical digital output so you can get the full sound quality and record in SP mode. The iMic output's just a line output. :sleep:

I find MO drives (Hi-MD and otherwise) far too slow to be of any practical use as a data drive.
Over half an hour to transfer 1 GB... no thanks.

I'm tired of transcoding, so my DS8 (non Hi-MD) will likely be my last MD unit. Unless of course Sony gets off their high horse and includes native MP3 playback in their next round of Hi-MD. I might consider it then.
Almost dead-set on an iPod Mini, except for that sticky little battery life figure, and the inability to use easily swappable rechargeables (i.e. gumsticks or the Li-Ion cells the NH1 uses), somewhat makes me still keep my eye on MD.
Ya, I know there are other HDPs with battery life superior to iPod, but they are friggin' huge. Even the new Nomad players are massive compared even to a 3G iPod. And out of all these other HDPs, only the Nomad really has the output power to match iPod.
A lot of 5mW dealies out there, yanno. And my MD already does that.
Bah. I wish I had more money. I'd get both. :grin:

Europe has some pretty strange electronics rules.
I didn't have a single ferrite core in with anything. When I bought my N10 in the box, it had no spare cores. The only one in the box was permanently attached to the USB cable.
However, the NF520D I bought for my best friend Nika... it had like 3 extra ferrite cores. One was even on the remote cord. :sleep:
