  1. I found this forum and minidisc.org back in the summer of 2003 when I was working night shift and trying to decide on my first MD purchase. I ended up with the Sharp DR7 based on the info and reviews I read here. That's what got me started. I joined in 2003 but had to rejoin (forgot my credentials) in 2004. One of my favorite places online (if you haven't noticed ). Long live MDCF/Minidisc.org and all of its children (Atraclife, etc)!!!
  2. Are you referring to the USB connection as the PClink? If so, that won't work. You need some input into the red or white inputs (analog, digital or optical).
  3. Since this is definitely aimed at prosumer recording, I don't see the need for extra lines of information. That only leads to more battery drain and if you don't have an AA sidecar, that is the point! When I record with my RH10 (that's really all I do with that unit 99.9% of the time), I need battery level, meters, bitrate, and time left. Anything else isn't very useful. If it were more of a player instead of a recorder, more lines make sense for more info. But, keep it simple and the battery drain to a minimum is my stance.
  4. We all know how Sony tends to bump those numbers up just a touch I was feeling bummed about that battery option as well. I did a quick search on eBay and found many available from China for under $20 including the shipping cost. Having 2 will be a requirement. I guess I can always keep my RH10 handy with it's NiMh at the music festivals, etc. eBay search for LIP-4WM
  5. Looks like the USB port is on the unit itself, see Post #20's pictures.
  6. Ok, I was a little fast with that sarcastic reply. I would like to see both a Hi-MD deck and a car unit. I would buy both in a heartbeat (about as fast as that last reply )
  7. As long as they offer the right features, who cares if they only offer 1 model??? I would rather they spend time on R&D and get it right than offer a bunch that only do 1/2 the job ... As long as they make more the 1, we can all get 1 and everything will be okay Other than the battery options, I am impressed and very interested!
  8. I never had their omnis just the cardioids. I know how much A440 just loves cardioids! I think their cardioids sounded pretty good for the price. But, like I said, you can't go wrong with SP's omnis and a battery box or the Radio Shack method (what I use when I stealth record).
  9. You should be okay with the Sound Professional mics, I have had great experience with them. I would recommend that you use a battery box and go line input instead of mic input or you can go mic input for acoustic material with the battery box as well. You can save money on the SP mics if you buy them from SP on eBay, I just saw the basic SP binaural mics for $39 on ebay from SP. Saves you $10 to go towards a battery box :-) Yes, Yes, Yes, that's the beauty of Hi-MD The RH910 and RH10 both have high/low selector for mic sens. You will love the difference in the real stereo mics. If I were you, I would get the NH700 (runs on AA, records legacy MD (SP, LP2, etc but you CANNOT upload via USB) and HiMD modes (can upload via USB). You can save the extra money for the microphones and some power. Trust me, all of three of these will record the same way. You will get far more bang for your buck if you spend it on mics and power. I have been there... You could always take a look at Giant Squid Audio and get a battery box and mics in one package: Giant Squid Audio Omnis with Battery Box These are good quality and are great for what you are looking to do. Good luck and post some samples when you have time!
  10. Your 1 and only problem is the MD must be a Hi-MD and you are attempting this with a Net MD which will not work using Sonicstage. Try using Marcnet's HiMD Renderer program which has a tool to help with the realtime analog copying you will have to do to get it on PC. Or buy a Hi-MD and re-record the tunes in HiMD format, then you will have no problems (with uploading )
  11. You can adjust the levels with the track wheel on the 40ELK. When you do that you see the numbers: 16/30 and so forth. This is with the RH10 and RH910. The unit screen and the remote show the same thing.
  12. These are no longer available as of 11:46am EST.

    710 vs. 910 ?

I would spend the extra money and get the RH910, it's really worth it. Or look and find a NH700 somewhere. It's got everything you need and runs on an AA power source.
  14. The jumpers were on the card and I had to use the manual to know how to set them to accept the optical input. I sold that card on eBay when I got the Audigy, so I can't help there. Out of ideas right now.
  15. Good idea! Since it's happening to all of her MDs, maybe it is the unit having the issue, not the MDs or the software. Makes sense to me.
  16. 1kyle- Very good test instructions, I too casually skipped those troubleshooting steps and went to the card. Thanks for picking up the ball. I was thinking about this card this morning... I remember having to set the jumpers on the card to make the card accept optical input. Do your instructions include jumper setting instructions?
  17. It's here Minidisco. The only OUTPUT is 1/8 headphone jack and the input is RCA analog. But, look it's only $699 plus shipping. Anybody else seen this thing cheaper? Links would be nice...
  18. That looks like a chaintech clone. Look in your hardware system profile and check the driver name there. There a ton of these cards that basically run on the same driver in XP or 2000. It's really a buggy driver that isn't very dependable. Sorry for the bad review but basing it on my own trials with that card and chip.
  19. I had a similar problem with Optical input from a MD deck to a chaintech card. I had lots of missed data after I got it finally accept the input. Finally, I gave up and went with the Creative Sounds Audigy and never looked back, until Hi-MD came along. So, I think: 1. It's a driver issue 2. A settings issue for the driver properties What is the driver name for this card?
  20. DRM is Digital Rights Management (or Manure ) I have had problems with DRM in old version of SS deleting tracks or reformatting my 1G Hi-MDs. I noted the most problems when I mixed the occasional Connect store tracks onto a HiMD with other ripped tracks without DRM. It got ugly a few times. Really suggest the SS 3.4 route. It's removed a great deal of restrictions and in the process made transferring easier and less likely to cause problems.
  21. That's not totally true. I can delete any track, whether or not it was recorded by PC, using my RH10 or RH910. Not a problem anymore. However, I cannot do this with my MZ-S1, so it's a hardware issue, not software that keeps the PC tracks from being deleted by the older MD units. Just that old black magic (aka DRM) getting in the way!!!
  22. I just turn off the sound EQ on the RH910 and make adjustments with the 12 band analog EQ if needed. I have not noticed any sound difference between the RH910 and my RH10. I might try something this week since I am at home this week recovering from some minor surgery. I admit a full function deck would be nice, especially a remote control but I can't see how it could sound much better. I have had 2 different MDLP decks and I know how those sounded through the same system. Really am pleased with the RH910's output from the miniplug. YMMV of course...
  23. Since I am taking my RH910 to work less these days (except to upload new tunes to play on the computer at work, thank you Sony for SS 3.4, which I then play with Winamp) I decided to connect the RH910 to my stereo amplifier/eq with Polk Audios in the family room. I mixed about 18 CDs onto 1 Hi-MD for my wife: ranges from Norah Jones to Buena Vista Social Club, smooth and classic jazz vocals, etc. I am amazed at how good this thing sounds at Hi-SP through this setup. I am using a 12 band analog EQ between the Hi-MD and the amplifier. Some random thoughts: 1. The Shuffle playback is very fast between tunes, almost no gap or silence between tunes. Even my wife made a comment about how smooth the transitions are between tunes. 2. The sound is almost perfect. I previously had only listened to Hi-SP with cheap headphones or on my Atrac CD boombox or connected to my car stereo AUX line input. The Polk Audios are loving the input from the Hi-MD. 3. I have the unit connected to the AC power adapter and the Quick mode is "On". Does anyone see any problems with keeping this unit connected and powered for long periods? I have removed the battery to prevent any problems with the battery memory, etc. The Quick mode is very, very responsive compared to the "Off" response time. 4. This unit will probably get a lot of play time like this because it sounds fantastic and the mix capabilities has my wife very happy. She likes to shuffle all of her music. Me, I prefer to listen the way the artist intended. I guess this will have to suffice until I can afford a Hi-MD deck. But, then again, why would I need a deck if this set-up is working out so well? Just some Sunday morning ramblings and glowings about my new RH910 setup.
  24. Although this was closed in another thread...it's a good read anyways. There is some interesting discussion going on over at engadget.com regrading the RH1...check it out here
  25. I have watched this thread with some excitement and have even posted over at Taperssection.com about our soon to be RH1. I use my RH10 99% of the time for recording only with the RH910 getting a little more playing time (but really only for road trips, etc). I will definitely consider selling off either my RH910 or RH10. Most probably ditch the RH10, since I feel the RH910 will probably last longer (the LCD v. OLED screen for one) plus it would be nice to have at least 1 unit that I can read in the daylight, since that RH10 in the daylight is very hard to read. My wife is already rolling her eyes about 1 more MD purchase. I am going to Boston in late April/May and I am keeping my fingers crossed that my purchase of the RH10 last year at the Sony shop will be topped by a RH1 this year! Since my hobby is recording live music, the functionality benefits I see in the RH1 make it a "no-brainer purchase" for me. Especially if we get a metal body, the 352k recording, USB 2.0 upload, manual recording level adjustments and no auto-tracks. I will need to be physically restrained from not purchasing this unit. Thanks for the updates and enticements! Can't wait for the lights to go down, the music to start and to see the RH1 in action!
