  1. Presumably they will first have to drug you, tie you up, threaten you with hot implements, and so on? Thanks for your hard work on this -I will be surprised if any more in-depth review appears anywhere any time. Interesting thought - I do agree! That's good news, if only for peace of mind. You haven't mentioned the record level setting use of the knob which also provides forwards and backwards, but I guess that's a standard way of doing things with Hi-MD recorders anyway.

If you take the advice there not to use the supplied minijack cable and to make up you own, I'll repeat a suggestion I've made before (how can one repeat a suggestion that one has not made before?!) - buy a premade cable with minijack on one end to two phonos on the other end(s). Chop off the phonos and replace with XLRs. Soldering two cables into a little minijack is a real pain, but working with XLRs is pretty straightforward (and here at least you can get perfectly good solderless ones).

(Kind of OT, but while we're mentioning Sony products, anyone using them for audio rather than video should have a look at Reaper - http://www.cockos.com/reaper/ ) Is it known for certain whether opening an atrac file, editing it and resaving as atrac will not reprocess the file? In other words, does the editing happen in native format? If it is processed twice, you might as well convert it to wave and work on it there losslessly.

  6. Quite possibly the oldest working item I have is the mark one minidisc recorder! Or the Aiwa CD player which has a broken power switch so it hasn't been turned off for some years, but keeps running nicely. Power amps seem to go on for ever too. (Touch wood....)

  8. I found that Acid will open an atrac file from which drm had been removed (in the "Optimised files" folder) but would not handle others.

  11. Press for play/enter, up for FF, down for RW, also Up/Down for record levels (when recording of course you won't be trying to FF or RW). This arrangement is what requires the dedicated playback level buttons.
  12. I can't help feeling that the notion of a guy popping into his local radio shack store to get some parts to knock up an anti-gravity machine sounds a bit bizzare. Perhaps he'd do better knocking up a 2Gb Hi-MD recorder.

Thanks - indeed there are ways to undo auto track marks, but if you want to insert track marks manually at points of interest other than those Sony decides are interesting, they get mixed in with a load of others and there's no way to distinguish wanted from unwanted. For instance, when recording classical music you'll end up with dozens of them, but no way to separate those manually inserted at (say) the start of movements - which may continue directly from the preceding movement with no significant pause - from those that result from the abrupt transition from "ppp" to "fff" during a movement. It's disappointing that almost all other "if only!" requests have been fulfilled with the RH1 but it's still functionally poor in this respect. The final frontier to be addressed in the RH2? I'm almost - but not quite! - put off from purchasing.
  15. Still no info on whether auto trackmark can be completely turned off on the RH1? Or have I missed something in scrolling through rather a lot of posts?!
  16. BTW, not having used MediaJoin for a while, I've just run it through a quick test and verified that combining tracks with it (with no format conversion) gives an identical result, bit for bit, as combining the tracks in Adobe Audition 2.0 audio editor.
  17. 4. "Mediajoin" from http://www.tucows.com/preview/396569 or other sites. After you've transferred via SonicStage and converted to .wav format you can use this utility to combine the transferred files into one, with some conversion options too. It's freeware.

I use an external lithium-ion battery pack with my NH900 - http://www.interbatteries.com.au/product_i...roducts_id/2836 shows it - obviously not good for stealth but on the road can be used for recharging. It seems to enable at least 24 hours NH900 Hi-SP recording. I had to make up a suitable power lead - no problem - the NH1 does cause a lead problem of course - the RH1 at least has a standard type of connector.

  21. Having read all 16 pages as they developed over the last few days, I've forgotten whether it's possible to really totally turn off auto track mark with this unit - anyone know? Thanks to MDfreak for your hands on reports & photos - much appreciated!!

The lid legends seem to be the wrong way round - I'd have designed it so that the controls were on the front edge not the side edge, so I'd have put the lid legends 90 degrees clockwise from where they are now, the same way as the control button legends. Of course it matters not - just seems a bit odd. The functions of the controls seem to be (reading from the left of the picture) Display/menu (click for display, hold for menu) Playback volume down/up Stop/Cancel Pause Track mark Record (the usual slider) Combo lever/button for fast forward/rec level (push up), rewind/rec level (push down), Play/enter (press) ... and presumably that control navigates the menus in the usual way. Significant change from previous models is the separation of playback and record level controls - the rest is pretty standard. The provision of a "spectrum analyser" on a display that small is a bit of a joke. I can't imagine it showing my eyes anything that my ears wouldn't be better at identifying. Generally though, it does seem to address all reasonable requirements - at last.

Re where cables plug in - pursuing the idea of operating the recorder in a small case (belt worn or over the shoulder) in pro style rather than stealth style, having the cables emerge at the bottom reduces stress on the cable and the recorder - the cable drops straight down (to begin with) rather than bending at a right angle right away and exerting corresponding leverage on the recorder (which being light is then liable not to stay straight). Downside is a greater tendency for the plugs to pull out of course! Remedy for stealth users would be to use right-angle connectors/adapters, I guess.
  24. It seems to me that the point of the thin display is so it can go on the side of the unit, which is where you'll be looking when wearing it for field recording. Indeed one might wonder whether it will come with a proper field recording case. Even when used on a table top, you'e a better chance of reading an edge display than a top display (hence the stands other models come with which holds them in a more vertical position). Likewise, you want the controls along the top front edge. They do seem with this model to have actually thought about how it will be used. So often, when you use something, or even live in a building, you do wonder whether the designed or architect had ever used it or lived in it themselves.
