Yeah upgrade upgrade, and software gets bulkier and bulkier (and sometimes even more stupid) I'll see what the benefits are.... probably no much Because when you design a perfect product, nobody will buy upgrades something BillG knows for very long now...

In theory the quality of a mono channel should for the above mentioned reason be better, or? 2nd is that 256kbps vbr? when I calculate the amount of minutes on a full himddisk and compare that with the bitrate it doesn't match is more than 30 mins off(?) thx Paul

I wonder if Sony will implement 'adding track marks based on gain level' Occaisionally I get extra tracks when recording from the radio (which is quite noisy still) however it only happens when there is a quick fade-in to a relativly high level gain so no slow fade in's those have to be added manually. Sync is set to off btw I wonder what was Sony thinking with that auto-on auto-gain, everytime setting the levels manually sjeehs. Well somethings are brilliant while others are rather moronic, aah well...

Hey it's sounds cool to me No annoying snare, nice compression

There is no mono option on the MZ-NH1, I know mono recordings will become a left-channel recording, will it occupy the same space as a stereo recording? Thanks, Paul

Thanks, Dex, btw I just tried to transfer tracks from the himd unit which I had deleted on my harddrive from whithin SS 2.1 and guess what SS doesn't even ask and just deletes the whole bunch and still acts as if it transfers, I wonder which moron it was... really nice, thanks Sony Paul

Good thing, but I wonder, can I suggest everybody here to use either AAC (Apples itunes compression, M4A extension) or Ogg Vorbis for compression? mp3 is really showing it's age and I can cleary give you examples where AAC shines over mp3, consider listening to Bjork's "Frosti" from the album "vespertine" I know mp3 is the de-facto standard but when you use HiMDrenderer I'd use Ogg or FLAC (but that'll be a no-go because of file-size) For storage I have a free 1GB mailbox with mediacenter where everybody can download (also with optional passwd) but it's in german (GMX.net) : ( I don't know about Gmail from Google... Anyone? Paul PS: I have some jazz recordings in Hi-SP taken with Sony ECM-717 and NH1 they sound wonderfull.

Sure digital is easy. But I have to say that now when I'm recording from a great FM radio station, even when there is hiss is far better than to wait for mp3 to come in from the internet and you don't have nasty mp3 compression or track-gaps (when you have one-mix CD's you know what I'm talking about, horrible), it's creative too because you can cut tracks with the MD unit, quite precisely even, for instance I have cut the Chemical Brothers Come with us CD (every working day they broadcast a whole CD (when it fits in one hour, otherwise the cut it off : ( ,) ) at different track times that freedb.org gives just because I liked it better to let those tracks begin and end differently. Just my 2 cents : )

And what about HiMDrenderer? I wonder if there will be Mac support amongst others, Marc? I have a problem right now, I have recorded tracks from the radio (line-in) which I stil want to edit on the HiMD unit (MZ-NH1) but as I have already uploaded them using SonicStage 2.2 and then with HiMDrenderer converted them to flac / wav (while SS was running) and deleted the OMA files from within SS, I still get a 'TRK FROM PC' -error when I want to add track marks! Really annoying. So what should I do? How can I tell SS that I have destroyed copies on the PC and that SS tell my HiMD to quit nagging with TRK from PC? Thanks! Paul

I don't remember which post it was but I *don't* have to pause any recording to change the recording level after I have switched to manual level in the menu! The unit is a regular MZ-NH1 and it works on mic input as well as line input. Weird but good.

So is mono an option with Hi-MD? I didn't see one on my MZ-NH1... Paul

I have bought the Sony ECM-717 after checking out a site http://infos.0db.net/micros/compare/indexe.php3 with various recordings made with different mikes, you should check it out. The 717 is a bit noisy (like all cheap mikes) but has a nice 'open' sound and for the money a good buy! Just recorded a jazz concert and it sound really super, of course with such high volumes you don't notice any noise, that is only audible at speach and ambient soundpressure level.

WOW, that's a lot of compression on that jpg, I can hardly see any other that the black unit which is below the zoomed out-pic

Hey, I bought one today (in Prague : ) ) and it came in a similar case or box as for the old tried&tested compact cassette! , to big of course for the disk itself but it seems to me Sony wants to promote HiMD as the new replacement of compact cassettes, which it actually is for me, cause minidisc is just as versitile (? fck the spelling) and easy as cassette's are / were ; ) Paul

Yeah, I don't know about the laser but I don't want to wait half a year for the unit to return or something like that. It's pretty stupid for such an expensive and rigid device to break so easily, well ok it's just 1 mm : ) The clash between the idea of flawless beauty and the perfect world created by imperfections... Go ahead shoot a bullet through my membrain, brain, ... brain.ckerhk,..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I was sooo carefull but still it happened, my almost new MZ-NH1 fell from a desk (1m height) on a soft carpet. The unit was in it's 'soft-bag' which came with the unit. At 1st I didn't believe anything like that could have damage it but the lid now closes with a little gap Is this a resaon for a warranty-swap? Hell I wish I wasn't such a prefectionist Thanks
