Hi BruceC. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have also lost some important recordings with my Hi-MD recorder. Too bad Hi-MD is at least a little bit unreliable. :-( Try updating to SonicStage 3.2 and maybe you'll be able to play back the tracks in the software and manually record them onto PC if you can get the disc to be recognized again. There are no recovery tools available (that we know of, yet) for Hi-MD. You also may want to try contacting Sony support again. They very well may have some recovery tools available to them, that they need to make available to us! If you hang on to the disc, and don't make any more recordings on it, wait things out and maybe over the next year or two, we'll get a way to recover Hi-MD audio. Good luck.

$0.50 (canadian) md cleaners @ wal mart

Huh. I haven't seen any of those before. That might be good to try with my NH1 which has been acting up lately. I've tried using a Sony brand dry brush MD cleaning disc on it, but it hasen't made any difference. -
This article is a couple weeks old now, but it offers some insight into how the company has been operating, and how it hopes to do better in the future. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05180/530332.stm

I really don't think we're at 'the end'. You make some good points about how there has been very little advertising, and low availability, but I really doubt that Sony will just abandon the format. If you look at some of the news articles about how Sony is planning to relaunch the Connect store, and reorganize the company, there is at least some light at the end of the tunnel. So...I'd hold out hope...maybe Sony will finally get it right and 3rd generation minidisc equipment will be really, really cool.

Hi angels vs. aliens (nice name, btw), Unfortionatly, there is currently no way to recover audio recorded in Hi-MD mode. A process called TOC cloning is available for non-Hi-MD minidisc recordings, but until we (we as in the minidisc user community) get either... A). A Hi-MD deck capable of Hi-MD TOC cloning or... . A set of software tools for Hi-MD disc recovery ...you're out of luck. I would e-mail Sony begging and pleading for recovery tools. Contacting Sony really seems to be your only hope if you really want to recover your lost recording. I wish you good luck.

Hey, that looks pretty sweet. Hopefully that will be introduced over here in the US soon. I like the "large size display with dial search".

Hey everyone. Sony is probably planning and designing the third generation of Hi-MD machines as we speak. Let’s get some ideas together for what features we would like to see in the next line of portable recorders. I know I’ve got a few suggestions, so SONY…LISTEN UP, PLEASE! -First, please bring back the TIMESTAMP feature on high-end portable recording units. This feature is easy to implement and very handy to have. Why this was skipped over on 2nd generation machines I will not understand. Please…bring it back. -Also, please bring back the LINE OUT feature as well. I realize that this is not as dire as some of our other ideas and suggestions, but like the timestamp feature, it is easy to implement and very handy to have…even if it must be selected from a menu on the deck like 1st generation machines. -Let’s see a Hi-MD photo unit that has a MIC IN jack. How cool would it be to record a concert and take pictures of the show, all with one unit?! I know I would buy one, and I bet a lot of other people would too. -A 3 megapixel camera instead of 1.3 megapixels would also be nice to have. -I’d love to see support for a lossless audio format other than WAV. Having minidisc support for FLAC or SHN or MonkeyAudio or whatever would be OUTSTANDING, and would help put Sony’s digital audio players back on the competitive track with other companies. Perhaps this would be technically difficult to put into the decks, but I bet it could be implemented in SonicStage. -Please consider the suggestion by another person on this forum and think about packaging an inexpensive stereo microphone with units that have a MIC IN jack. This is a great idea. I bet Sony could sell a lot more units if a consumer could see that with just one purchase, they could own an ad-hoc recording studio. Who else has got suggestions for the third generation machines? Let’s have ‘em loud and clear. Hopefully Sony will h.ear us. (Sorry for the lame pun).

Hi kpayson. Try to contact support at the Sony website to see if you can get some money back for your bad discs. I've also got an MZ-NH1 and I've had several (3 or 4) Hi-MD discs go bad on me...all from different batches and different ranges of serial numbers on the back. My experience with Hi-MD discs is that they are not overly reliabe, and it seems that the more a Hi-MD disc gets reused, the less reliable it becomes. It's a good thing you had backups of your recording.

Me three. I too should be working......or...on the phone filling out forms consolidating my student loans!

Perhaps your question should be in the "find your minidisc" section. Check out the equipment browser on minidisc.org to find a model that has all the features you want. I'd recomend the RM-MC40ELK remote and either the MZ-NH1 (which comes with that remote) or the RH10.

Ohhhhhhhhh. ::reads a little more closely:: Well in that case I'm not sure. If you don't mind splitting up the file, perhaps you could split it into just a few smaller files, convert them to atrac3plus, then try to transfer and see if that solves the problem.

Use marcnet's himdrenderer to make the WAV files. You can find it in the downloads section. Also, if you like the program, a donation for his work would be cool.
-
It can be done with SonicStage, but not with mic-in or line-in.

Check out Sibelius, and Noteworthy composer. Sibelius is the best, but Noteworthy composer has a good trial version that should do everything you'd need for composition.

Wait for third generation players! (if you can stand to wait that long) Maybe then we'll finally have a sweet deck that does everything we ever want, including timestamping . Anyway, this thred is getting old now, but my vote is for the NH900.

I've got a few old discs I recorded that play fine or with very little trouble on my old equipment, but playback skips and cuts out when they're played on my Hi-MD player. Strange. You'd think they'd play great on new equipment, but all my problems are bassakwards. I have problems recording on new Hi-MD discs but not the old, er.."standard" ones.
-
*BUMP* So has anyone tried an old MD Lens Cleaner on a Hi-MD unit yet? I'm very interested since my MZ-NH1 has been acting up. If no one has, I'd be willing to try. Unless, someone can give me a good reason not to.

Ohhh man. Electronics and water do not mix! I bet saltwater is even worse. Does it work at all now?
-
Yeah, wouldn't it be nice if you could make changes like that. But hey, now you know for the future. Put all the track marks you want on the disc in place before you transfer to Sonicstage. If I'm not mistaken though, you can use Sonicstage to change the title of tracks on the disc after they have been transfered to PC. Someone please correct me on that if I am grossly incorrect.
-
Yep. There are some features on the NH1 that just cannot be reached on only the unit itself. You have to use the remote to turn off certain options, features, etc. Thankfully though, all of the recording options can be accessed without the remote. That is really helpful if you ever find yourself in a situation like that.

No timestamp??!!?.... ...... Having just found this out, I've gotta say that the lack of the timestamp in the RH10 is a damn shame. Here's another case of an advertised feature that Sony did not deliver. Shaaaame Sony So now, is this the case for all RH10s or are there any that actually do have the timestamp feature (Japanese vs. North American version)?

Ready or Not! I drum for a fast-paced, punk-influenced rock band. I've played with this band for about four years, and I started playing drums about six years ago. It's a shame I didn't start until after high school...only because I never got to play in jazz band. My younger brother plays drums and he's receiving more instruction than I'll ever have. Anyway... Please! Check out -->http://www.geocities.com/readyornotvt<-- Follow the links to hear our songs at soundclick.com and myspace.com. Play on, fellow musicians.

Thanks everyone for all the votes and replies. Perhaps I should have put an "I occasionally have problems with Hi-MD discs' choice in my poll. Maybe there is some misalignment with the optical unit in my recorder. 1GB discs seem to work fine the first time I use them, fresh out of the package. After that, after updating the TOC multiple times, that's when the problems start.
-
My reason for this poll is simple. I would like to know, from as many Hi-MD users as possible, if they have frequently experienced problems recording with Hi-MD discs. I have not experienced any of these problems recording in Hi-MD mode with Standard MDs. I think it's important to draw attention to this issue since Hi-MD seems to be somewhat buggy and still fairly new. My recordings on Hi-MD discs have failed on more than one occasion. Others have experienced problems like this as well. Please share your thoughts and ideas. Thanks.

Yeah, it looks like that feature never really happened. But hey...who cares when you can record in PCM, huh?
