  1. Hey...what a story. Thanks for sharing. I can almost hear those chips being crunched on now. I need to get a bass rolloff box or volume attenuator too. I know bass drum hits are maxing out my recordings, but...it hasen't really botherd me or been very noticeable until now. So...the RS volume attenuator helps keep from maxing out the preamp, even when it's turned all the way up?
  2. Also, you may want to keep in mind that the RH10 can only record in Hi-MD mode (when you're not using Sonicstage). This feature may or may not be important you you, but it is a difference to keep in mind when thinking of these two units.
  3. Thanks sebastianbf. I consider this a big bug with Hi-MD if others are experiencing it too. Since my post I've ejected, and reinserted the disc and it recorded alright. Straaaaaange. One of those ghost problems...
  4. OK, this is my tale of two recordings on one Hi-MD disc. I have made comments about this issue in a couple other threads, but now I'm very frustrated... The other day, I go into Radioshack just before I'm about to go to a concert and record it. Much to my surpirse, I see that they finally have some Hi-MDs in stock for $6.99. Hurrah! Now I don't have to buy them online! I buy one and go out to the show. The bands on the bill were Vendetta Red and A Static Lullaby (nice loud rock music). Happy with my purchase, I use that Hi-MD disc. Harmony! The show records great, and the deck worked perfectly even with all the moving around I did with it in my pocket. No gaps of silence, high quality...recording went great. Tonight, I used that same disc to record a choir performance at my school. I place the recorder on the edge of a balcony and let it sit completely still to do it's thing. Chaos! The entire ~30min recording has gaps of silence and sections where the disc spins faster, and playback gets 'hung up' every few seconds. Why? So I have two questions. 1. Has anyone else out there had a problem like this with their Hi-MD discs or decks? I haven't seen anything about this here on the forums recently. 2. What could be causing this problem? Perhaps the disc was inserted ever so slightly crooked? I'd rule out dust or dirt since the disc is new. I have not yet experienced this problem recording in Hi-MD mode on a standard MD. Please share any thoughts, similar stories, etc. Thanks. End of rant.
  5. If you press the "P Mode" button while recording, you can lay down track marks. I use it while recording shows to do a rough split-up of the tracks as best as I can, then later on I clean them up and make each mark more precise (at the beginning of each song) before transfering to Sonicstage.
  6. Hey, Low Volta that first Caselogic case you posted looks excellent. Just big enough to hold everything I need, so I'll try that. Thanks.
  7. Hey there! How did your recording turn out? I'd love to hear it. Could you post a song or two in the gallery here in the forums?
  8. Ha! That's rad. Thx 4 sharing that.
  9. I have a reason not to trust Hi-MD discs. There are spots of silence in a few of my recordings made with muh MZ-NH1, and it has only happened with Hi-MD discs (two, out of the six I own have had this problem). I'm not sure how it happend. I suppose it may be due to dirt or dust inside the disc casing, because I'm sure the recorder was not receiving any physical shocks while I was recording. In any case, I have not had this problem with Sony 80min standard MDs in Hi-MD mode. Strange. My other Hi-MD blanks have worked alright tho. Has anyone else had this problem of....'spots of silence'?
  10. Such a great question. I wish I knew what the norm is, myself. I don't have a bass rolloff box but it'd be nice to have sometimes. I've got one recording that got nicely overloaded by some real LOOOOW rumbling bass. Anyway, I found this old thread...hope it can help. EDIT: Oops. Forgot the link... 11. Hey, I'm the 5,000th member. Woo Hoo! Go MDCF!
  12. OK, how about this one.... http://www.radiodirectory.com/usstoreproductsB0001YFYF6.html This case came free with my MZ-NH1 purchase. The armband can be detached and cases don't get much smaller than this. I too am looking for the perfect case for my MZ-NH1. It should be a soft case and it has to be just a little bit bigger than that armband case. Big enough to hold two Radioshack mini microphones, the clips for 'em, and a couple audio adapters. Please, post your cases here!
  13. My guess is slim to none. All MD units make at least some sort of small audible mechanical noise while recording. If the mics are far enough away from the unit while recording then this is a non-issue.
  14. Sketchy! I have not had any problems with my NH1 deck 'reboting' [kNoCk oN wOoD]. I would fight to the end to have it serviced or better yet...exchanged! Good luck.
  15. I agree. Try calling customer service by navigating through the support section of the Sony website.
  16. You may be able to have your disc recovered. If you're sure that you actually recorded the second show, chances are that it's still on your disc. The TOC is just messed up and rese' to 'blank disc' most likely because the table of contents got messed up while saving the data from your show. Look around minidisc.org for links on TOC Cloning and Disc Recovery. You may be able to find someone (at a radio station, on this message board) that has a deck capable of TOC cloning and your recording can be recovered unless you recorded in Hi-MD mode: no TOC cloning yet). This worked for me with an important recording I had. Here, check this out... http://www.minidisc.org/cloning_procedure.html Good luck.
  17. My most sacred disc has a mix of my first college radio show. It was a massive electronic music blowout featuring Dieselboy, Aphex Twin, Cornelius, Ed Rush + Optical, Goldie, and...well I'll stop there. It was a great show if I do say so myself. I've got a great collection of 'sacred' discs going. Thanx, MD.
  18. The only problem I've had with my MZ-NH1 is that every once in awhile, tracks will record with small bits of silence throughout the track. This can happen either when I'm recordinng from Sonicstage or from Mic-in. My hunch is that this is because of a defragmented disc. When I tried another disc after having that problem recording of microphones, that problem went away. Strange. Has anyone else had a problem like this with their Hi-MD player?
  19. Huh. I'm leaving for Italy in less than a week, but uhh...I don't know about this. Thanks for this info but I think I'll buy a 220v adapter anyway just to be safe (I'll need it for some other appliance anyway). I've already fried one MD recorder here in the states with misconfigured polarity on one of those adjustable AC adapters with swapable plugs. Sparks flew out of it when I plugged it in!! Heh...now it smell like gunpowder. I can laugh about it now but I was pretty upset at the time.
  20. The only difference between the two is that the NH1 has a magnesium case, and the timestamp feature. The main advantage the nh900 has over the NH1 is the use of AA batteries and a slick jog dial on the unit. I agonized over the two when I was deciding what Hi-MD player to buy. I wouldn't discourage anyone from trading if they want to.
  21. I figured this would work well as a poll instead of just a discussion thread. See also... http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=8391&hl=
  22. anwa, You may still be able to recover your recording. Look around minidisc.org & other sites for minidisc recovery and TOC cloning. You should be able to find information on how it works, and if you're lucky, someone who has the right kind of deck and can offer to recover the disc for you. Good luck.
  23. WoRd! It sure was nice, back in the day when there were only two recording modes to agonize over: Stereo SP and mono!
  24. Hey hey, I have two of those Radioshack microphones, and make them into a stereo signal with an adapter which I also got at Radioshack. (This is starting to sound like a Radioshack commercial). Anyway, I've been very happy with them in terms of sound quality and the overall, umm...value. I love having two seperate mics to make recordings with a variable stereo range (by placing them close together or far apart) instead of having both left and right mic elements built into one capsule. So, if you're happy with what you've already got and want to save some $, you may want to consider buying another mic to match...and a Y adapter that makes a stereo signal out of two mono sources. Or don't...just my 2¢.
  25. Have fun recording concerts and things like that with your iPod. I think they have that great feature that lets you do a few seconds of voice recording.
