  1. Even if they make mini B'ray discs for portable audio, it wouldn't be a minidisc. Minidisc's are defined (at least for me) by their magneto-optical record/read technology. Making a small optical disc putting it inside a plastic case for use in a small portable audio device is going to result in something resembling a mini-cd walkman, etc. rather then a next gen minidisc player. If such a device were created it would undoubtedly be the death-toll for the minidisc format. Which would be a very sad day for all of us. And as tekdroid mentioned the b'ray discs don't/won't have the same chemical stability as md discs as they just change the chemical properties of the ink with use of a laser as opposed to the heating(laser) writing(magnetic) cooling process for recording md's. Although portable mini-blueray players would be nice they would have vastly different characteristics to what we know to me minidisc today.
  2. The Pro-deck sounds nice.. but id like to see a unit that has a cradle with line out. you walk home listening to your favorite hi-md disc go inside hit the switch to your.. stereo/amp with your minidisc cradle attached via aux-line in, while your unit is still playing you just insert it into the cradle and it automaticly switches and plays 'seemlessy' through your cradle and out your home system speakers. i use my unit for about half of my home listening because the rest of the time i just cant be bothered un-plugging my headphones looking around for my line in cord & plugging it in. also id like to be able to change discs without hafting to remove the unit from the cradle. while im still making wishes.. maybe a wireless receiver on the cradle or unit and a compatible remote... how great would that be.
  3. Wow... *deep breath.. relax ok im ok its fine. firstly im very happy that MD lives and breaths not just in our cruel and twisted 'sony' hearts. I was worried for a while that id be stuck with my nh-1 forever without having an oppertunity to get a functional & slim designed upgrade. true i probably wont purchase this model but i am certain that if sony keeps heading in this 'customer' friendly direction i will be out there..(Indoors on the computer(Australia)) shelling out my hard earned cash for another model sometime in the future. So im just a little interested in the usb 2.0 detail is that upload as assumably the unit can read that fast or can be designed to read that fast. But what about download? can it record faster? i thought that the magneto-optical system was maxed out. and im guessing that it doesnt have twin recording heads as that would probably near double the cost. Can anyone clarify the usb2 statement? also i'd like to register my interest in a pc unit or usb capable deck with multiple recording heads for superfast download.. as transfer speed is one area that minidisc has trouble keeping up with developing technologies or at least has in the recent past. anyway i am very supportive of this new unit and maybe the new ceo. isnt all that bad... i'll probably even stop my death threats and slander campaigns against him
  4. well if anyone here has seen white noise... seems sony has found a loverly new (excessivly obvious) means of advertising their products... cant wait untill the third starwars comes out.. maybe they'll all be using 2nd gen Hi-Md products
  5. saw White Noise on the weekend.. in german though so i didnt pick up all of the dialogue.. i found it fairly pathetic and so did my friends though as a horror it did get me max 3 times... but i was trying to be afraid... actually ive never noticed such an obvious sony add. There were three people through out the the movie 'studying' white noise: the first had with him various sony products which included a sony minidisc business recorder, which was blatant advertising as all his other recodings besides that single one were on audio and video casettes...; the second person went out and bought 4-5 sony tv's including one of the new flatscreens and 4-6 sony vcrs, and not surprisingly the final person had an entire set up of sony products... im not sure if the radio at the start was sony... and the computer monitors didnt seem to be sony but we didnt get to see there brand clearly...
  6. I'm not sure if theres something wrong with me or not but id prefer a player that only played atrac codecs rather than one that only played mp3 with all else being equal. true sony could have made atrac into a file format such as mp3, wma, etc. but what interest is it of theirs to just replace a whole bunch of less efficient(quality per mb) mp3 files with their own atrac formats for a way of illegal music transfer? from this perspective it is in their interest to keep the illegal music scene using the least efficient format possible as to slow down the rate at which their products are illegally distributed. And do they really want the responsibility of strengthening the illegal music scene? Even though this is true i believe that the entertainment side of sony has been leaning quite heavily on the electronics department and i wouldnt be surprised that the new management setup will remove some of the pressure put on the design/construction departments of sony electronics and maybe we'll see a greater increase in compatibility, which is what so many people seem to have been praying to the sony gods for such a long time.
  7. whether the new ceo likes md or not sony corp. shares were reported up 4.2% this morning on cnbc europe... seems someone has a positive view of the change in management
  8. Hi im reletively new to minidisc.org forums and i was just thinking that a new forum category for users speculations and or ideas on future directions of sony and the minidisc medium. I know that this kinda stuff gets regularly distributed throughout all forum topics but was just thinking that it might be interesting to see what crops up if forum users have a place to focus their creative, analytical and adaptive minds... anyway i have enjoyed using your forum and browsing through old post very much so far and plan to continue into the future. thanks for your time
  9. Interesting problem.. wonder if the second gen will have that weened out.. has anyone tried recordint the track, pting in tmarks deleting the midle track then switching off the player switching it back on and trying to merge the 1st and 3rd tracks?
  10. i am quite interested in aquiring one of the new hi md players and and thankful of the chance to clarify a few poins. firstly im concerned with the durability of the rh10, from what ive seen the 5line screen seems to be contained under a uniform front plate. does that mean the front plate has a perspex (or similar) outer layer and wouldnt that be quite prone to damage, scratching, etc. secondly the remotes seem all to be single line remotes will the players also be compatible with the 3line remotes? Also will the players be able to dowload the new audio formats without sonicstage? and will they be able to download from any no of computers? finaly and i suppose this is wishful thinking but will there be any posibility of mac- sonicstage or similar? i think sony would have been far better of if in the begining they released atrac as a playable file format for pc's in the first place... maybe thats the next step..
  11. Yeah i imagine that i will be getting a 2nd gen himd, i like the new display on the rh10 and one of the main things that has kept me from getting the nh1 was that it couldnt have a AA boost pack attached so the added playback and recording time is definately a bonus. although i would still record the majority of tracks in atrac i think that mp3 wma wav compatability will be a good thing and may come in handy as it'll theoretically save transfer time if i just want to throw something on the player and go. but as has been said id like to find out a little more about them before shelling out.
