thanks everyone. I've now done a bit more research and it appears that there is no level control available for the iTalk iPod set-up even though they say 'adjustable gain settings give you control over the volume' on Griffin's site - that just means you have a high + low switchable setting. That's not good enough for me. I like the neatness of the iPod set-up but it doesn't appear that I'm going to get he quality I need. I'm prepared to sacrifice some sound quality for size though - I need a small unit and md works well for that. all the best I have a G5 by the way

I have used a MZ-RH10 for some time but I am hugely frustrated at the lack of Mac upload. I have no desire to buy a PC to rectify this but may look at Virtual PC. I am now considering getting an iPod with a mic - possibly the griffin iTalk Pro http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/italkpro/ but wondered if anyone had tried it and compared it with Hi-MD? It works at 44.1/16 bit so there's one comparison - it apparently sounds pretty good, especially if you connect an external mic to the iTalk housing whcih you can do (cuts out machine noise). I want to do environmental/atmospheric recordings for use in pieces of music and I want as good quality as possible at this very portable size. I know there is a newer Hi-MD with the Mac upload option but I'm kind of sick of Sony and what seems like their anti-Mac policy. Thoughts greatly apprecitated. thanks

Is there any likelyhood that Sony will provide Mac upload support for the MZ-RH10? I'm wondering whether I should get rid of this machine and buy a newer model that is supported. The lack of upload facility is a real problem for me. Thanks

when you say 'this summer' is there a date? does this info come from sony? best

thanks is it definite that Sony will produce a version that works for other Hi-MD recorders? best

that's what I feared - any more acceptable work-arounds on the horizon? thanks

I have been waiting for some time for a way to upload my recordings to my Mac. I have recorded them on an RH10 as Linear PCM. I have just tried Hi-MD Wav Importer and the tracks appear greyed out. Is this just down to the mini disc model I am using? Is there another way to get these files uploaded on the Mac without using Virtual PC? Thanks in advance.

quick mode was on - thank you.

I am concerned about the battery life of the RH-10. I have barely used it but it seems to use up the whole battery while off. I had previously fully charged it and took it out today and found the battery flat. I had put 'hold' on to avoid any buttons being accidentaly pushed while in the pouch. There is no 'off' button as such on this model - it just switches itself off - or does it? Any ideas?

Thanks - I had seen that thread but was just hoping that there was another way, not involving installing Virtual PC and Windows on my machine. I have researched this but haven't come up with anything so far. Will keep looking and hoping though. best

I have just purchased a Sony MZ-RH10 Hi-MD recorder + a ECMMS907 mic. as a compact recording set up for making location recordings. I am looking to make the best possible recordings on this unit (storage time is not a priority) so plan to work with PCM uncompressed. Am I correct that the only way I will be able to get these recordings onto my Mac is via the mini jack line output of the MD (i.e playing out analogue)? Is there no software (freeware or otherwise) that can upload them - after all they are Wav files aren't they. I have a whole host of audio software on my Mac that can read Wav files but what I need now is a way to get them onto the Mac hard disc in the first place. any ideas? thanks

Thanks - since posting this I read that I can record in PCM (the unit hasn't arrived yet). It's a shame that there is no software out there that will allow me to get these files off the disc on to the Mac though. best

Thanks for your help guys. It may be a bold move but I have gone ahead and purchased an MZ-RH10 Hi MD recorder even though I haven't worked out the Apple Mac upload option. Since the whole reason I have bought this item is to have a very compact reasonably high quality recorder that I can use for on-location recordings, I am keen to understand more about how it records. I understand that I can manually adjust record levels (which I want to do) and record uncompressed. Is this true - my understanding is that the only record options are ATRAC which I thought was compressed. Someone did say I could record WAV but is this true? How am I going to get the best possible recordings from a microphone on this machine? Am I right in believing that the only way I am going to be able to get my Hi-MD recordings on my Mac is to play them out via the analgue line out socket of the MD player to my Mac audio interface? Is there no bit of software out there that will allow you to connect a MD recorder to the Mac via USB and rip the files off and convert to something like AIFF? These are my own recordings so there is no copyright issue here! Hope someone can help. All the best

I am considering buying a Hi-MD recorder - possibly the Sony MZ-RH10 when it comes out. I am looking for something compact and very portable to do location sound recordings when I am out and about - these recordings will eventually be used in pieces of music. I'll probably use a Sony ECMMS907 mic. Two questions: i) does this sound like a good purchase for my purpose? ii) I am using an Apple Mac - the Sony blurb says that the software with this MD is not compatible with Macs. Is there any way I can upload and download files from a Hi-MD recorder to a Mac, without having to record stuff on to it in real time. Thanks
