  1. Will the Hi-MD format be replaced with a more DVD-like format with 5 times the capacity as the 1 Gig Hi-MD disc?
  2. Interesting how flash memory is now replacing mini-hard drives. The handwriting is on the wall: Hitachi is getting out of the mini hard drive business, and is concentrating on notebook and desktop sizes (2.5” & 3.5” hard drives) Soon ipods will be using flash memory instead of mini hard drives. It makes sense because hard drives have many moving parts and are susceptible to rough handling. This is one of the reasons we love Mini-Discs, they can handle jostling with great aplomb. My question is this: is flash memory going to be the next interchangeable medium of choice? Will us MiniDisc lovers eventually be forced to move to Secure Data media (for example) as MiniDiscs become more scarce? I don’t know but I still love my minidiscs. However if Sony developed an inexpensive secure data recorder, I might be tempted…
  3. THANK YOU! for that wonderful review. I know I'll use it every day.
  4. Loved this review! Rarely have I seen such an in-depth, user-friendly review on anything. I felt as though I was right there playing with that machine. The upshot of it all: I had to go to Minidisco and purchase the "older sister" Onkyo MD-133 deck. I too wish that Sony would get off the dime and start building HiMD decks. But I don't see it happening.
  5. Nice piece of gear, and I'm going to order mine ASAP. But I've been pondering the following questions: - Is the Minidisc HiMD format really settled? - Is this why no HiMD Home Decks have appeared? - Is SONY working to incorporate Blu-Ray technology in the next generation of HiMD portable units before launching Home Decks? Think of it: a 10 GB HiMD minidisc for under $6.00. It COULD happen!
  6. Just to clear up a minor point, Win IE (WinIE) also populates a warning menu to caution against opening executable files. But some people (me) won't take "no" for an answer. I tried it unsuccessfully three times until I changed my profile to "Administrator" then it obligingly executed the file. Luckily Symantic caught it and saved my skin!
  7. Yup. I inadvertently opened the file. Symantec anti-virus caught it and destroyed it. But it disabled the Windows Firewall and made it impossible to launch the firewall. I followed all the recommendations from Symantec, and re-installed Windows XP Pro. My machine is completely cleaned now.
  8. I enjoyed the paper. Although it's in an academic style, it's written so well that even someone who never heard of the Minidisc can read it and find out a lot about the format and it's history. Well researched and documented - it's a minidisc manifesto! The minidisc is rightfully represented as a replacement format for the cassette, and not a challenger to the CD. Although in my world, HiMD HAS replaced the CD. I only grudingly make CDs for friends without Minidisc players.
  9. I want one. Just what I was looking for in a live-concert recorder.
  10. I've been waiting for a HiMD deck since the new format first came out! I do a lot of timer recordings of radio shows on my 3 decks and edit them later using the powerful edit features. I love the sound quality of the HiMD compared to MDLP which I use 90% of the time. I'd probably buy at least two HiMD decks, and get rid of two of the MDLP decks. I'd even like it if Sony could retro-fit my current MDLP decks with HiMD.
