I stumbled across this Blog about CD music disks by sony, do you think this is the same way they do it on minidisc's. In topic 12702 I asked a question is there a program that can image like Clone CD or copyIImypc? Thanks smilesalot2u ____________________ We're better off financially if we act our wage

Sorry I was out of town, so couldn't reply, It was audio. But, it appears that I did not format it. I tried my test again these are my results. The following is what I did exactly(Sorry for the long reply you can skip and go straight to the questions at the end.) PROCEDURE: I went and turned on my Stereo and recorded 5 minutes of WMA Audio using microphones via the line in port(not that it matters). I then took the HI-MD and listened to the music I recorded off my stereo speakers. Heard everything fine. Next I went to my XPpro sp2 PC and connected my RH10 to it via the USB cable. I opened "My Computer" and then my HI-MD drive. Then using the right mouse button I drag-n-dropped the HMDHIFI folder and HI-MD.IND file onto my desktop. (using the selection "Move Here" [for the HI-MD.IND file I received the "this is a read only file are you sure you want to move" warning and I clicked yes]) I checked the disk by right clicking on the drive and going to properties it read 1,011,613,696 bytes or 964MB This gave me a blank HI-MD disk when looking at it via "My Computer" and when I disconected it from the USB cable and pressed the play button on the RH10 it came up with the "error cannot record or play" and about 5 seconds latter it asks "CREATE AUDIO FILE? YES:ENTER NO:CANCEL" On the disconnected RH10 I selected cancel and went into Menu mode and then File List option which replied with the "NO FILE" answer. From this I concluded that the data was gone Next I reconnected my USB cable to my RH10 and moved the HMDHIFI folder back onto the HI-MD drive from the desktop (got the read only file for HI-MD.IND file message again) I could play the audio recorded files again. I could also see the the HMDHIFI folder and all the HMA files when I selected File List option Im sure many of you have received the same results, next I started tinkering by removeing the HI-MD.IND file and was still able to play my recorded sample music The next test is where I failed, and where I goofed up in my previous post, I had assumed and you know what that means except I only made an ass of me. Thank you Low Volta for asking the question I moved the HMDHIFI folder off the RH10 again and when it asked to create an audio file this time I pressed Yes option. The mindisc recorder responded by displaying a system file writing window and created a new HMDHIFI Folder basiclly the same scenario when formating a disk. I don't know the difference maybe someone else in the group can enlighten me? When I moved this directory off the HI-MD disk into MY Downloads folder and moved the recorded audio HMDHIFI folder from my desktop back onto the disk it would come up with the infamous "CREATE AUDIO FILE? YES:ENTER NO:CANCEL" which is the reason that so many of the experienced minidisc users have been saying no you cannot copy the proprietary files off the HI-MD QUESTIONS: This does bring up a couple of questions though which could be answered if the right people were inquired. Of which I am not one. First why can I move the directory on and off the HI-MD as many times (well I only tried 4 times because I read that sony copy protection lets you copy 3 times) as I want as long as I dont reformat it? Are there some hidden files on the disk that change everytime one formats? Is this date and time related? If one could find the hidden file or switches I would be able to save my data via drag and drop (the millon dollar question everybody wants answered) I found an interesting blog about Sony and their 3 limit copy protection on audio CDs they have produced, I wonder is this the same copy protection they use on the minidisc? Unfortunately Im not computer savy enough yet to figure this out. But I definately wanted to share this with the minidisc community maybe someone else understands the implications and how we could apply it to our situation matter of fact I will post that as a question I remember back in the good old days there was a program called copy2my pc, which would image the whole copyprotected floppy, is there a program out that would do the same thing. I mean we have it for CD's(clonecd) and DVD's why not the minidisc? Any answers questions or comments are welcome smilesalot2u

I didn't try to record with it plugged into my RH10 I just played it. So with that in mind I went and tried recording and listened to the motor. You are right greenmachine the motor stays on all the time, as soon as I disconnect the battery pack 15 or so seconds later the motor quiets down or as you call it idles. As soon as I plug it back into the 3 volt in the motor starts up and stays on, I left it recording for 8 minutes and came back and sure enough the motor is still running. So the next test for me will be to attaching a size D battery to the battery pack attachment and see if the motor stays on continuouslly. if not then I will use that approch for an extended battery pack. Id be curious How the NH1 reacts if you use a battery pack into the charging stand Maybe Ill have to buy one now that the price is right. Sorry greenmachine I didn't test it right the first time well time will tell Smilesalot2u

I just did this as a test I moved the directory off my RH10 to my xp prodesktop I then disconnected it from my pc and did a format of the disk. I then moved the whole folder back onto the RH10 and was able to play it. Why did mine work. It was 300 megs of data. smilesalot2u

No I did't notice, Ive used the same pair of size D batteries to recharge the gumstick 6 times as well as record for I guess about 12 Hours. One night I left it on all night to listen if I snore. I just tried plugging it in and listening to the disc motor spinning vs with it unplugged the motor stopped within a minute for both, of course I dont have a stop-watch. (maybe Ill try that tomorrow?). But leaving it alone in stop(cancel) mode with the RH10 plugged in and not plugged in the OLED light went off about the same time as well. By this Im assuming(U know what that means) that there is no increased power consumption and the disc motor doesnt spin constantly. Basically the same thing when you have the AC adapter plugged in. Hope this helps smilesalot2u Some people say "Grin and Bear it" I say "Smile and change it" ps for those that dont know what assume means, it could make an "ASS of U and ME"

Should I stay with minidisc or move to a HDD DAP?
smilesalot2u replied to lamewing's topic in The Loft
No you shouldn't keep the minidisc's you should sell them to me for 10US$ each , I guess you have to determine is the minidisc a want or need. I would also look at depretiation value and MTBF of each product. I agree with lamewing not only look at the specs but actual handeling. I also ask how many moving parts does it have and what will go wrong first, besides asking how much power does it consume and how easy is it to find. I use my HI-MD for storage purposes, they definately beat DVD-R and CDR's because they dont get scratched, I have an image of win 98 , xp pro and a couple boot images that I have used in a cinch. Again its all up to you, another choice is the 6 month rule if you dont use it in 6 months get rid of it. smilesalot -
Works fine for me, I recently moved to Finland and they have 220 volts here, the watts doesnt matter because your product doesnt draw that much current. Of course you can use the battery pack that we discussed in your other question. On that note I was interested in buying the worldwide adaptor but they dont have any in stock and the customer service rep wasn't much help either. Im going to go ask the Finland Sony rep. Monday Thanks for the part number Ishiyoshi smilesalot

I dont see why you can't, only difference is you have to leave your nh1 in its charging stand, you would connect your size D battery pack where the AC adapter plugs in on the stand, your AC adapter tells you the polarity of the connector plus it also tells you the DC output. So, with that information you can build your own battery pack. If your still confused heres an interesting site, that I found to help with my digital camera, I took the info from it and applied it to my RH10 make your own Battery pack. Its great because he explains all about batteries and load as well as how to make it. I liked his webpage so much I sent him a donation to help others who were in the same predicament as me. Besides I also don't have to spend hours explaining the technical mumbo jumbo. With that info you can go to a local radio shack or for me a hobby store (Im now in finland) and get what you need. Hope this helps, matter of fact he mentions using a size F battery, I didn't even know they existed Ejoy smilesalot

here you go

My whole set up the microphones and microphone battery pack(hidden in the black netting below the D cell battery pack and left of the RH10) are from sound professionals. sp-tfb-2's

I purchased both these items (battery holder and 3 volt adapter) at radio shack, but I think you can go to any electronics store and get them. I created an external battery pack from 2 D size batteries and a case I bought at Radioshack, I took my RH10 in to fit the battery pack to the 3 volt adaptor, since I dont have a soldering iron I just twisted the wires together, plugged into the 3 volt input and so far I have recorded 10hrs without recharging, of course if I want I just press recharge and my gumstick gets recharged from the D cell batteries. Next on my list of to does is modified the external battery pack to work with D size batteries. I have pictures if interested Smilesalot

I wanted to ask has anyone tried attaching 2 D cell batteries to the external 3 volt connector on the RH10 or any minidisc , looking at the specs in theory I should be able to do it. Years ago I used to have a 2 D cell battery pack to my walkman so I figured I could do the same thing here. Voltage is the same just increased Mah storage capacity. But before I do it I wanted to ask the Masses their opinion is there any other things I haven't thought of. I bought the 2 D volt battery pack from radio shack also obtained the correct power interface, Iv'e confirmed the voltage is correct the next thing to do is solder them together and plug it in. I got this Idea from reading about digital cameras, theres a guy on the net that gives explicit instructions how to build a battery pack for the camera to take mor pics. If anyone is interested I can give the URL. To build the ultimate battery pack. All comments thoughts and opinons are welcome Thanks ahead of time

I can go to my local Fry's electronics and get them for 6.99 plus tax anytime I want. Now if it was $4.50 that would be something to think about. Ebay has em for 5.50 plus shipping. Im still looking to set up a group buy where we can get a bulk discount. If your interested or know of any , count me in for 10.
