  1. I purchased the recorder for the same reasons! Recording elderly relatives... music concerts, etc. 1- yes, it is right for it. 2- yes, you can upload it only once, but why would you want it sitting on the minidisc anyway? what I do is upload it as 'wav', splice it however I want (get rid of the garbage), save, then convert to mp3 in itunes or in my audio editing program (adobe audition) 3- that's real-time uploading, where you basically play the file and the computer captures what you're hearing. that's always going to be possible. however, USB offers much faster uploading, but again, you can do that only once. the worst case scenario ever is that you will have to upload in real-time, rather than quickly through USB. 4- once you get the 'wav' file, and/or convert it to mp3, just transfer it over to your non hi-md as normal. the major advantage of rh-910 is the usb direct upload basically... you NEED a good microphone to go along with this. i /highly/ recommend the sp-bmc3... best bang for your buck: http://www.minidisco.com/sp-bmc3.html order it from online. you can clip it onto just about anything, and if you're doing surreptitious recording, you can have it underneath your clothing and clip out onto your sleeves... and the quality is stupendous!
  2. thanks... yeah, it seems to be an encoding issue but I have resigned to the fact that the minidisc player is kind of finicky and eccentric, so i decided it wasn't worth it to put any music on it, and save music playback for my ipod. instead, i'm using my 910 as a dedicated recording device for concerts and music lessons (which is why i got it!) -- and it's excellent... super hi-fi recordings, even with the automatic gain control!! even if apple come out with an ipod which officially supports hi-fi recording, i think it will eat up a ton of power in constant disk usage, so 3 hour concerts would be a pipe dream on there... woohoo
  3. yeah, the headphones that come with the 910 are ultra lame... in my opinion. it seems like a sports-ish model... no foam covers, the cord itself is kind of a 'springy'/rubbery material... and the length of one earbud is longer than the other! i went to the sony store to inquire about this, and apparently it is the design... you're supposed to put one ear on (the shorter one), and then swing the longer earphone cord around to the other ear behind your head!! i'll just stick with my bang&olufsen A8's...
  4. I think it has to do with this perhaps... is there any easy way to change it? gah... I hope the optical block is also not bad... bleh, maybe I'll just have to shelve the use of the MD for recording purposes only... the recordings are phenomenal for any sort of musician, esp classical. as a side note, is the recording quality due to the mic i got? (sp-bmc3... and to an extent, quality is for sure determined by mic)... or does the actual MD player itself somehow have a role as well...?
  5. hi, I'm new to MD, and I acquired the 910 in order to make live recordings and occasionally listen to music... so after a lot of bs, I installed SS and was able to put tracks on the HI-MD. Some of the tracks, it seems, did not go through properly and whenever I try to play them on the MD, it says: CANNOT PLAY what's wrong? and, last week, I was able to play one of the tracks just fine... and today, it says "CANNOT PLAY" for that one. what gives!! gah sony.
  6. I notice the EXACT SAME THING... wtf sony. How long "should" it take to charge the 910 battery? Yeah, after a while, the "charging" disappears... but if I press "charge" again, it continues to charge... I'm not sure when the battery is fully charged. Can anyone else shed light? Also, real-world battery life? How long do people get for: - playback - recording (e.g. a concert... using the standard BMC-3 mic) ? Maybe if I record a concert, I should get out the AA battery extra thingie...
