  1. Thank you for your suggestions! I will try the HiMDRenderer and see what gives. If the "errors" occur when doing the recording or when SS is importing the song it won't help, but at least there is one less thing to worry about. To split the signal I use a small box called CO2 made by Midiman. It has three modes: take an input signal on optical and output it to both coax and opticaltake an input signal on coax and output it to both coax and opticalconvert an input signal on optical to output on coax and vice versa (bidirectional)Cheers, /Daniel
  2. Hello friends, I have a job coming up tomorrow where I will be recording a singer and a piano player. I will capture the sound in pcm to a compact flash recorder (m-audio microtrack) with my nh900 running as a backup, also in pcm. As a preparation I made a digital recording from a cd to both the recorders and compared the results to the ripped track. I had no problem getting sample accurate results on the microtrack but my md is giving me trouble. I have tried what the manual suggests (setting recording volume to auto(agc) in rec-pause mode and then starting the recording) and I have tried with manual recording level of 23/30 and 24/30 which gives values lower and higher than the original. I have double checked that I am recording to pcm. What else could be affecting the bitstream on the optical input before it gets written to the disk? There is of course the issue of not being able to save digitally made recordings to wav in SS3.2 (which I have and is downloaded off the forum.) To solve this I am running total recorder set to 100% recording level, but there still is uncertainty that I am saving a sample accurate copy of what SS is generating. I have read this thread too, but I doesn't give sample accuracy, only approximate level matching. The samples could be off by +/- 50. The md is just a backup solution, but I really would like to make the best effort possible. Any ideas? Thank you in advance, /Daniel Enochsson
  3. Units: Sony MZ-NH900, Sony MZ-R900 (stolen now), Sharp MD-DR470H, Sharp MD-MS701 (not working anymore) Discs: 3 Hi-MD discs (but my Hi-MD is still quite new to me) approx. 30 MDs daily use: listening to audiobooks at home and music on the move (bus, train, plane, walking...), books or music at work, as data disk for computer backups professional use: recording of singing- and viola da gamba lessons, my blues ex-band concerts and my choir's concerts. You get super quality recordings with a Sony ECM-MS957 microphone and some (a lot, mostly) postprocessing in the computer (most importantly EQ to bring back the underemphasized bass and lower midrange). My fellow singers are extatic about what I can achieve with that little portable recorder! favourite use: Professional quality recording of live music, convenient way to listen to books. alternatives: Maybe the M-Audio microtrack 96/24 for recording and a HD-based player, but it's not as "sexy" as Hi-MD and the cost of flash memory compared to Hi-MD media... Ouch . request: Please make it possible to split long tracks on the MD (for instance audiobooks) that have been uploaded digitally using Simple Burner! I would also like a playmode that selects folders at random and plays those tracks in order. That would turn it into a jukebox that plays random albums from Hi-MD media. Finally, if possible, I would love to see support for even higher capacity media (2-4GB) so recording (I always record to PCM/WAV) of long concerts could be done without worrying about swapping media.Keep it alive and I will continue to use and endorse MD!
  4. I agree with: - Focus on main functions of the format (no camera for me...) - Manual recording levels remembered between two pressings of stop - A 2second keypress to toggle AGC/manual levels or, even better, remember the setting as per above - An optional dedicated recording remote - Porting the software to java or other platform independent language - Firmware upgradability - Loosen up on the DRM nonsense. Why protect mp3 files? They are lossy and shared everywhere anyway. - A way to upload (analog) recordings made on old-style md media - 2GB discs would be great for no-worries recording in PCM, not to mention on-the-go jukebox and I would like to add the following requests: - A new playback mode: Select a group at random and within that group play the tracks sequentially. Then move on to a new group, and so on. (With Hi-MD discs and the reasonably good sound quality in Hi-LP mode you can bring a lot of albums on one disc. The function would play random albums with all its tracks in order. It shouldn't be too hard/expensive to implement.) - Drag-and-drop of supported files (mp3 etc) in explorer without having to go through sonic stage. My main wish is for the new playback mode, though. Cheers, /Daniel Enochsson (Proud owner of a MZ-NH900 .)
  5. Many thanks for the super-fast reply Low Volta! After I posted I realized that I could check the schematics in the service manuals to look for evidence of plug-in power and all of them have it, just like you said. I always turn off AGC and I try to set the level for quite a bit of headroom, depending on what I am recording and to my ears I get good results with the R900 and these mics when recording rock groups as well as choir and solo instruments. The capsules can take very loud sounds before clipping, so it's more a question of setting the correct level and avoiding the AGC effect. I try to avoid a battery box (what, me taping without permission? No, never... ) Cheers, /Daniel
  6. Hi, I have been using MD since my first Sharp MS701 back in '97 upgrading every once in a while and I think I may want to upgrade again soon, to get Hi-MD capability. To know if they are usable for me I really would like to know if anyone has first hand experience using, for instance Panasonic wm-60ay, mic capsules without an additional battery box for recording on the MZ-RH10, MZ-RH910, or MZ-NH-900? I have successfully used the mics on the MZ-R900 so I figure it should be ok, but I really need to know before I buy. The mics are really super small and give a good result, but they need a power feed to function correctly. When used with the R900 the unit itself puts out power on the mic input. I basically wonder if that is still the case. btw, the capsules are the same that are used in DIY stealth mics and, I believe, the low cost mics from core sound etc. From the core sound website: My mics are the Panasonic capsules directly soldered to the connecting wire. Hope someone can confirm that it still works, since I really would like the possibility to record uncompressed WAV from mics and having the data imported to the PC for making CDs of the finished results. Thanks, /Daniel
