mp3 i think, it has to be atrac3 right? how do i change the format, it wont let me

I am having a problem with Sonicstage 3.1, when i try and transfer a song to my Net MD player an error pops up that says, The following songs couldnt be transfer because Sonicstage does not support the file format, how do i fix this/can i fix this, please help, thanks.
