  1. Hello there.

The RH10 I am using suffered a fall before some time, so it had to go to service. After a very long procedure, i got it back fixed and to my surprise I found out thats not always its the batteries that cause short life.

Before service, the old stock sony battery and a quite new GP only lasted for a day or two, when they were supposed to hold for a week according to my listening habits. I always charge with original sony charger, btw.

So, after service, the batteries, both old and new had their much longer life.

It seems that probably batteries get dried out from use, but there must be also something in the actual MD units that affect charging! it would be interesting to know if that can be controlled from firmware or its some component affecting that.

  2. i will definitely take it back to service because the RH10 cannot write!! it can playback fine but when i try to write either from SS or from player itself it remains forever on the writing system info screen! IDIOTS. but that one the other hand is very strange, has it happened before.dyou think its firmware issue?

  3. I had the RH10 repaired and head changed cause there was "read error" message. After service the very 1st line of pixels on the screen is lost because all lines are moved up by one, so now the 1st line is the actual 2nd one. What could be the cuase of that? is it something to do with firmware, can i tweak that?

I could return it to service just to piss them off, since i paid around 200$ to fix that, but im not into getting into the trouble again for something so minor.

i entered service mode and realized that the screen didnt move up but just that one line of pixels(2nd) isnt working anymore.what can i do?

  5. i got rh10 to sony today aswell and told me 6 working days, so i'll post any news

from sony they told me they need to change the head which costs 99 euros (140$)..

do you think its worth to fix it? is there a place i can find cheaper parts? im sure that in greece they are much cheaper than other places.

  6. I had a similar problem when I bought a fake SONY battery. It charged fully in an hour, and provided much less playing time than the original. Disposed of it the next day.

you reckon that GP battery was fake? should i get a new one from mediamarkt? (the 1st one was from ebay)

  7. After one year of use, my sony 1400mAh battery, started having a very short life so i decided to get a new battery. I got a 1350mAh battery made by GP but the problem wasnt solved. The life was better with the GP but it was nowhere near how the sony was when new, and much less than using an AA battery with the add-on case. Also the charging procedure stops earlier than it used to, maybe one hour after starting charging. I only charge batteries when they are completely empty so i wouldnt say they suffer from memory effect. I am starting to think that the RH-10 isnt charging properly anymore? is this possible?

  8. after a thread about russian characters support i tried to use greek characters with the RH10 to no luck. but today i realized that it can actually display them, out of the blue i do not know how(song#3). and as you see in the photo another song which i renamed today doesnt display correct(song#1). so its a bit tricky but it certainly can display these character sets

  9. Unfortunately, I don't know Greek, and don't have Greek support on my PC. But I know for sure, that even 15 year-old Japanese word-processors (like CASIOWORD HW-6000V - just checked its manual) have support for both Greek and Russian (and Greek comes before Russian in the character set table). This was years before Unicode. So the Hi-MD must also support Greek. Try tweaking your Regional Settings further.

As for a Russian sample - I have no idea where to get a Russian song in MP3 legally, AND with Russian tags. You may try renaming any track using Cyrillic character set (use the Character Map, if you don't have a Russian keyboard). Then just check that the titles are the same on the PC, and on the Hi-MD. Don't forget to enable support for Russian in your Regional settings.

i've tried any language setting and the characters display fine in SS, but even with alternate destination codes besides 24 the russian characters don't display in RH10. it used to show ????? but after some tweaking it now shows northern characters like äçðöø. strange...

  10. eventhough the greek songs display correctly in SS4.0 and destnation is set to 24 they dont display on the RH-10. can you send a sample mp3 with russian name on the ID3 tag to test if it can be displayed?thanks

EDIT: I installed the cyrillic fonts and they displayed fine in SS but no on the rh-10 eventhough its set to 24.strange...

  11. Turns out, the Hi-MD standard does support Russian. Today I had some successful experiments, after having read some info in a Russian MD forum, that one participant's RH10 sometimes displayed Russian properly, but this person was unable to reproduce this. Here is the description of my results.

Operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional English (!), with Service Pack 4, and all currently available updates.

Software: Sonic Stage 4.0.00.05080 with no tweaks whatsoever.

SonicStage used to give me trouble when importing MP3s with Russian names. Turned out that is was due to the locale of my OS being set to "English (United States)" (I mainly use English-language software, so I set it this way).

Now the fun begins. I changed this setting (Control Panel->Regional Options->General->Your locale (location)) to "Russian". The parameter below (Language settings for the system) was already set to "Cyrillic (default)", as required to support Russian. After that SonicStage ceased to give me any problems with Russian names and tags.

But transferring Russian-named tracks to the RH10 was still of no avail. The tracks transferred, and played, but showed dots instead of Russian letters. This turned out to be due to the fact that the destination code in the unit was set to North America (20). After changing this code to Asia (24), the unit became able to transfer Russian tracks, and display their names correctly. The letters are quite rough, and are spaced quite a bit (as if they were the size of kanji). Some people here in Russia may remember this kind of font from quite a few years ago, when the Japanese just started printing Russian manuals for their equipment. But still, everything is perfectly readable (even the letter 'yo' is displayed properly).

Tried this in ATRAC3plus and MP3. Works as a treat. Unfortunately, does not work in the MD mode (Hi-MD only).

So, it turns out that Hi-MD units are actually Unicode, while SonicStage is not.

I guess that support for other "officially unsupported" languages may also be obtained with relevant operating system settings.

One word of caution though. Sometimes tracks do transfer, but their names are completely garbled. This happens quite randomly, the exact reason is unknown (SS glitch?), but it seems somehow related to renaming tracks in SonicStage, and switching keyboard layouts. But either all tracks transfer OK, or none (no intra-album problems). And, if a track transferred garbled, it will always do so. You'll have to try renaming it, and the album. Or reimporting it.

Try this on your units and languages!

    P.S. Now I really love Hi-MD!!!

how do you change the destination code?

  12. can someone confirm that the line out on units that have one sounds exactly the same as the headphones with max volume and no EQ?

i tried maxing the volume on the headphones and turning the eq off and the signal is significantlly lower than the line out of a cd deck, if that means anything.

  13. i am planning to do some djing with MZ-RH10 and i would like to know if any of you have any experience with md djing. what are the rght settings in terms of a.VOLUME and b.EQ preset?

i guess that flat EQ would be better, but what about the right volume?

i am going to perform some tests comparing the waveforms of the CD player output and the MD output but i need some cabling for that and its not handy right now. thanks

  14. Try discharging it completely before fully recharging from now on. If you're lucky, it just suffers from the memory effect and will recover by itself. If this was your common practice already, the battery propably suffers from age/too many cycles and needs to be replaced.

yes,i've always been recharging only after the battery was empty. however a couple of times i charged it accidentaly for a couple of minutes thru the usb when connected to pc, and it is my impression that this had an effect ever since.dont know.

on ebay it seems there are only fakes. is there another place to buy a genuine one?thanks
