I had the same problem. Try pressing the stop/charge button on the minidisc player (while it is plugged into the wall socket) but REMOVE the disc before. Please let me know if it works.

I've bought them in a local Sony dealer here in Madrid, Spain. EDIT: I've removed the 1GB MD out of the unit and now is charging! I can't understand why ... but it works.

I can't charge the battery. When I push the button 'cancel/chg' I can see for about half a second 'charging' at the led-screen, but actually it doesn't. Any ideas?
