I have plugged a Shure Beta 58 dynamic into my minidisc (I have an Rh1 and a MZ R30) via an xmlr to male mini 1/8 inch cable. Works fine. There is some noise - not too objectionable for speech especially if its in the field. It would probably be better with a different preamp I haven't noticed any damage to the mic or minidisc.

Maybe use it as a backup recorder and player - it still has mic and line in or sell it.

The low cost - low tech way to do this is to record it into your computer's sound card or audio interface. Takes longer because it is a real time transfer but if you only need a few ....

Just recent picked up an old MZ R30 cheap. I tried plugging in a Shure Beta 58A dynamic mic in the mic jack with a XLR to male mini cable. I get a pretty good signal but there is a fair amount of noise almost like tape hiss. Is this the way it is with this model, or do I need a new cable or am I doing something else wrong? Thanks

I'd go with FLAC or 320 CBR mp3 and multiple media backups CDs, DVDs, Hard drives Here's a thought, if you own the copyright and don't mind sharing upload them to www.archive.org too

Sounds like fun. Condensers typically need phantom power and typically are more sensitive so they need less help form the mic preamp. Dynamics typically need more gain from the preamp and typically are better at rejecting off access noise. There are exceptions, the Heil PR 40 is a dynamic with a lot of nice condenser-like qualities It doesn't seem to me that switching to condensers will necessarily be a magic bullet. It seems like you have the worst of proprietary formats. Its a difficult problem. I usually just use my MD unit as a recorder and iPod as a player. The iPod is just such much easier to use as a player (at east for me) even though the MD sounds great. It seems to me you need to get away from proprietary formats. Maybe use FLAC for archiving and 192 or 256 VBR mp3 for listening or maybe just 256 VBR mp3 or 320 cbr mp3 for everything iTunes now supports multiple libraries so you can have an archive library and a portable mp3 library. Can you put the disc into the RH1 and then transfer to mac?

My guess is that the mp3s were encoded at a sample rate of 48000 hz and your player is expecting 44,100 hz Just a guess
